Famous Hongkie Style Duck Rice @ How Ji, Pulau Tikus

There are many stalls selling duck rice around Penang. Anyhow there is one  stall that prepares nice Hongkie style duck rice and noodle which is located at Hup Kee restaurant.

The name of this stall is called “How Ji” Roaster Rice Noodle stall. It was there for nearly a decade. I remember 7 years ago I have once tried out their roast duck rice when I was still in college and now the stall is still around and is standing strong. There must be some that keep them going for so long.

The owner Mr. Loh is a very friendly and polite person. I remember this stall is very famous with yam duck rice. However, this time I am not here for the yam or the rice as I was introduced by my customer that “Hou Ji” has something even better to offer.

The specialty is the wan tan noodle with extra duck and char siew (BBQ pork). At first I was surprised and not certain about the recommendation as this is not the usual combination that we normally had. This doubt disappeared as soon as the noodle entered my mouth. The noodle is thinner and smaller in size compared to the usual noodle that is served in duck noodle. It is so fine that it does not require much chewing and now I understand what it means by Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Teochew even Hong Kong styles of Wan Tan Mee that was mentioned at Criz Food’s Agogo Wan Than Mee post. The noodle that they serve at this stall is the Hong Kong style wan tan mee

For the duck meat hunter, the roast duck at this stall is a delicious treat. I love the crunchiness of the duck skin and also the soft and juicy bite of the meat. Adding on to the combination is some BBQ pork which is complementary to the noodle and is an excellent delight.

A large plate of roast duck, BBQ pork and extra veggie noodle cost RM6 which is very reasonable for a big eater.

  1. Thanks for the tip; I wouldn’t have known they had those skinny wantan noodles at this stall, and I tend to avoid roaster stalls coz it’s always just rice, rice, rice, and I’m not always in the mood for rice!

  2. I have eaten their rice before, but I must say that I find that their duck rice is a bit on the expensive side. Too little meat to enjoy.
