Wan Ton Mee House, Pulau Tikus – Wan Ton Mee with extra gravy

I was told that Wan Tan Mee House which is located opposite the Police Station in Pulau Tikus serves one of the best wan tan mee in Penang.

The wan tan mee shop opens daily from 6am to 4pm. What makes their wan tan mee stands out is the additional topping of gravy on top of the noodle. Besides, the wontons (dumpling) are good too especially the deep fried version. I am not always a fan of deep fried wontons but this one changed my perception of it.

Apparently, they used to sell wan tan mee at the corner coffee shop same row as their current independent outlet. Their new outlet is now able to cater more customers in a more spacious seating area.

The price of the Wan Tan noodle and soup is listed below:

Wan Tan Mee (S) – RM5.50
Wan Tan Mee (M) – RM6.50
Wan Tan Mee (L) – RM7.50
Soup with Vegetable – RM1.00

The wan tan mee is served with the usual dark sauce and covered with barbecue pork slices, mushroom slices and wonton (dumplings) before topping it with a scoop of starchy gravy which is not commonly found elsewhere in Penang.

As mentioned, there are 2 types of wonton. The popular one is the deep fried version. The size of the wontons was also larger than others and it did not taste too rich or fatty.

However, there was a charge of RM1.00 when we requested for a small bowl of clear soup to complement the noodle. Usually in other places a small bowl of soup is given as a complement for every noodle ordered or upon request. Although at this place the only option is RM1 for a bowl of soup with vegetables, I still don’t think it is reasonable since we were only asking for a small bowl of clear soup especially when there are kids who always prefer to have soup if the food is dry. Nevertheless, the soup was tasty and not the normal kind of soup you could get at other wan tan mee stalls.

Overall, the taste of the wan tan mee was unique and the deep fried wan tan tasted crunchy and delicious. The price of the food here was considered reasonable too as the noodle portion and wontons were larger than usual . The drawback is the additional charge of clear soup which is usually complementary in other stalls. It is also not easy to find parking nearby as the road is a main road and parking is not allowed.
