House Of Kolomee, D’ Piazza Mall – The Taste From Sarawak

My sister had been married to Sarawak for more than 10 years and whenever I went to Sarawak, I would never miss the Kolo Mee there. It has always been an urge for me to start a business selling Kolo Mee in Penang as I can’t find any stores around in Penang which serve this noodle and also it makes me crave for the noodle always.

Ironically, I found a shop that is selling my concept in Bayan Baru. Although I get to taste the original Kolo Mee from Sarawak, I don’t own that business unfortunately.

It is not hard to locate this shop. If you follow the road of Jalan Mayang Pasir 2,  turn to the junction where you can see Hotel Seri Malaysia, keep driving and you will see D’ Piazza Mall on your right. Turn into the complex and the shop is just facing the road.

Original Kolomee – Small – RM4, Big – RM4.50, there are many varieties of kolomee. From original and soup  base to chicken, vege delight and braised combo. Of all those different flavors I still prefer the original dried-style of kolomee.

The original kolomee is usually made of homemade noodle that looks like instant noodle and yet it is not the actual instant noodle that we usually take. The base of the noodle has no coloring which is transparent in color. It is then topped with minced meat, slices of barbecue pork, vegetable, garnished with some spring onions and fried onion slices. A great bowl of kolomee is not complete without chili slices on vinegar. I always like to place the vinegar into the kolomee as this will make the taste more appetizing and delightful.

Wonton Dry – RM3.50, for those who want to have side dishes, the dried wontons are also one of the pleasant delights here. The wonton was first boiled and then served in a light soy gravy.

The taste of the wonton was great. The bite of the wonton was chewy in which you can tell whether the meat used is fresh or not. It is a delightful dish for both kids and adults.

The ordering system is very straight forward and somehow different. You just need to place your order on the computer screen for the options that you prefer and a receipt will be printed out, and by referring to the number the food will be served at the counter. Most of the processes were automated and self-service.

As for drinks, the option of both cold and hot were available here too. The drinks were on free flow service and cost RM1.00 per person and also a complementary soup will be provided.

The soup and the drinks.

Overall, the place here was very simple and pleasant and the food was nice. There were plentiful of car parks surrounding the plaza. The only drawback of this place was the pack of people here during the office lunch time.
