Granny Country Kitchen 77 (娘家), Georgetown – Granny’s Home Style Cooking

Recently ‘my granny’ has been really busy as many restaurants and cafes have mentioned about Granny’s cooking, Granny’s recipes or even Granny’s Taste, except for Granny Smith apples where they are not as commonly known. Anyway, the above statement is just to elaborate how valuable is granny’s cooking recently. Granny’s cooking actually refers to classic dishes that reminisce home cooking that is usually prepared by our mothers or grandmothers and that are hard to find in modern restaurant or cafes.

One of the new places to get granny’s homecooked food is at town area. The shop is called Granny Country Kitchen 77 (娘家). This shop is located along Rangoon Road. If you keep driving from Burma Road which is a one way street, keep driving until 800 meters from the junction. On the left you will see 王昭君 restaurant,  and a few doors down will be Granny Country Kitchen 77 (娘家).

The restaurant has a simple and basic decoration, similar to their dishes which have no complication and complexity where it is easily accepted by the public.

娘家 in Mandarin means mother’s house (literally). For the younger generation, usually it has become hard to have home cooked meals due to studies or work commitments which require them to be out from their hometown.

One of the signature dishes here is their handmade noodle. You can choose to have it thin, thick or even hand torn.

One of the selling points here is their homemade chili paste. The owner has personally hand-picked and mixed different species of chili to make into this wonderful sauce. Therefore, for those who love hot and spicy chili paste, you should not miss out this place.

Hakka Pork Leg Rice

granny_country_kitchen5

This is a sweet and sour dish where the pork leg was braised until soft and tender. It was slightly spicy and appetizing. It is specially dedicated to those who love spicy, sweet and sour food.

Fried Garlic Pork Rice

granny_country_kitchen7

This is one of my favorites. The marinade of the meat was just nice and the crispiness of the pork cubes really brought out the aroma of the garlic and spices. The inner part was a soft mixture of lard and lean meat.

Sour Plum Chicken Soup

granny_country_kitchen27

This is another one of my favourite dishes here as the sourness of sour plum gave a very nice kick start for this feast. The chicken pieces in the soup were well soaked with the aroma and the sourness of the sour plum.

Secret Sauce Chicken Rice

Homemade sauce had been used to cook with pieces of chicken. This is a typical homestyle cooking.

Pineapple Sweet and Sour Fish Rice

granny_country_kitchen13

The sweet and sour fish fillet is a very common dish but a favourite to many people including both young and old. This dish can never go wrong if you are new to a restaurant.

For those who love to savour side dishes, there are many other options available on the ala carte menu.

Spicy Century Eggs

granny_country_kitchen11

The slices of century egg were served with extremely hot and spicy homemade chili sauce that ‘exploded’ in your mouth. For those that can’t take extremely spicy sauce, please be cautious when ordering this.

Lor Bak

granny_country_kitchen16

Crispy and crunchy deep fried lor bak. Although this is not the best lor bak that I have tried, the taste was not disappointing.

granny_country_kitchen17

Deep Fried Wan Tan

granny_country_kitchen18

Homemade wantan that were crispy and packed with flavours.

granny_country_kitchen19

There were many other drinks available if you need any thing out from the regular set.

Home Made Lime and Dried Plum Juice

granny_country_kitchen3

Overall, this is the place to look for homecooked meals and a taste from granny’s. One of their selling points are their homemade chili paste which have different level of spiciness to suit your needs. The price for the food is considered reasonable. The only drawback here is the difficulty to get a parking space during day time and sometimes during night time as well.
