Do you ever feel curious of how is the taste of kaya made from duck egg? How will the color and the texture be for the duck-egg kaya? Will the kaya be more delicious and aromatic?

You will be the one who is asking this question if you have never been to Kopitiam Kheng Hai before. If you had been to this Kopitiam, you will surely know what I meant of toast with duck-egg kaya.

It is neither difficult nor is easy to locate Kopitiam Kheng Hai. It is located at Simpang Ampat. If you take the highway exit from Northern side of Simpang Ampat, turn left to Jalan Bukit Tambun and keep driving for 1 km until you reach at the traffic light T junction. Then turn left to Jalan Simpang Ampat and keep moving for another 20 meters. You will arrive to another traffic light to Jalan Tasek. Keep driving for 1 km until you see Patronas on your right handside, then you are near to the destination. Keep driving for another 200 meters and you will see a row of shop houses on the right where the corner of the shop is called Kopitiam Kheng Hai.

Kopitiam Kheng Hai is not located in any town area or having any popular landmark nearby. However this place is always crowded with people during weekends. A lot of people from different states came to this place for its unique dishes.

The coffee shop here is not only famous for its duck-egg kaya, but it is also famous for its chai kuih (vegetable dumpling). As you can see the owner was busy packing and serving the chai kuih.

The preparation for the breakfast started from firing up the charcoal stove.

The breads were then placed on top of the charcoal and grilled till golden brown.

At this stage, the whole coffee shop would be full of toasted bread aroma. It is a wake up call to those that are still sleepy. The golden colored toasts were then transferred to another stage for finishing process.

In a very surprising and unique handling process, the toasts were passed to a person standing next to a classical wooden food cabinet. I have no idea why it needs to be done in a wooden cabinet. Perhaps by doing so can preserve the aroma of the toast.

The person in charge would apply the duck-egg kaya, jam, peanut butter or butter on the toasts.

Toast on kaya/ butter – RM1.20 per piece. A simple yet delicious charcoal-toasted bread covered with duck-egg kaya and butter.

Due to the kaya was made of duck egg, the kaya was very smooth and soft. The taste was also thicker compared to those using chicken egg. It was definitely worth to be tried.

Kopi-O (Black Coffee) – RM0.80, the black coffee here was very thick and full of nice coffee aroma. It was a perfect match to the toast.

There were 2 types of chai kuih available at this coffee shop. One of which was made of chives and the other one was made of yam and carrot.

Chai Kuih with yam and carrot – RM0.60, the yam and carrot were sliced and pan-fried together with dried shrimps. It was then made as a filling of the kuih. The smell of the dried shrimp mixed well with the yam and carrot. The skin of the kuih was also very soft and smooth. I loved the chai kuih here.

Chai Kuih with chives – RM0.60. Besides the chai kuih with yam and carrot, there was also the classical and common chai kuih that was made of chives. They tasted good as well. However, I still prefer the yam and carrot type.

Overall, the breakfast here was very good. The kaya that was made of duck egg was smooth and soft. The toast done by the charcoal could not be commonly seen nowadays. The coffee was full of aroma and the chai kuih was delicious. However, it was hard to get parking during weekends. Also it would be packed with people if you come here around 8am – 10am. Unfortunately, you would not be able to call in for reservation.

I find it really unfair to those in search for western food, and yet they are not living nearHB Pulau Tikus or Tanjung Bungah. Lately, most western food restaurants gather in those 2 areas only like no other’s business. For those that living near Farlim or Air Itam, so far not many options available yet.

Anyway, my introduction today is on Western food that is not covered in the prime locations. Instead, it is located at Paya Terubong. The name of the shop is Bon Appetit Western Deli.

The stall is located inside EQ Kopitiam. If you are driving from Air Itam to Paya Terubong via Jalan Paya Terubong, you will sure see Shell Patrol Station on your right hand. Keep driving for another 80 metres and you will see there is a new row of shop houses on your left which was developed by Lone Pine Group of Companies. Turn left to this row of shop houses, keep driving for another 10 metres and you will see EQ Kopitiam.

Bon Appetit is not an exclusive type of restaurant. It is a very down to earth and casual dining place. Therefore please do not have any high expectation on the ambiance.

The restaurant was setup and run by the owner, Pierre Choo. He loves to cook, and therefore, most of the dishes were cooked by him.

For those looking for affordable and delicious lunch, try the set lunch here from 11.00am until 3.00pm.

Set Lunch:

Chicken Chop Rice – RM5.00

Fish Fritter Rice – RM5.00

Pork Cutlet Rice – RM5.00

The set lunch comes together with rice, sunny side up egg, salad and also the option of chicken, fish or pork.

For the chicken chop, a layer of crispy batter covered the juicy and tender chicken meat and served with onion tomato gravy. It was very appetizing meal.

As for the fish fritter, the fish fillet was pan fried and served together with brown sauce and some touch of black paper. It is a good option for fish lovers.

For those who opt for pork cutlet, the pork was cut into slices and served with brown sauce. The meat was very juicy and it blended well with the sauce.

Ala-Carte:

Soup of The Day – RM3. For western cuisine, usually there will be soup of the day as starter. This round is creamy mushroom soup. The soup was thick and very satisfying with pieces of mushroom in it and served with a slice of garlic bread.

Poutine – RM4.50, this dish was originated from Quebec and made available across Canada. This dish is made of french fries, topped with mayonnaise and brown sauce and some herbs.

This dish can be treated as starter or even main course for those who are watching out on their diet. The mayonnaise of this dish will let you feel very appetizing while the french fries and brown sauce will fill you up.

Grilled Chicken Chop – RM7.00, the grilled chicken was covered with tasty brown sauce and served together with fries, salad and slices of bread with butter.

Instead of deep fried like the conventional chicken chop, this was prepared in ”grilled” version. The chicken thigh was marinated and grilled until perfection. For garlic bread lovers, you can request to change the bread with butter with garlic bread instead, as Mr. Pierre Choo is a made-to-order chef.

Grilled Salmon Steak – RM14.00, instead of beef steak, this is salmon steak. It was pan fried and served with a slice of lemon. The portion of the salmon was very generous at this price. The salmon tasted very fresh. It was best complemented with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Grilled Fish in Lemon Butter - RM7.00, besides salmon steak, there is also another grilled fish which was marinated and pan fried with butter and served with a slice of lemon. The taste was rich and thick compared to salmon steak.

Pork Cordon Bleu – RM9.50, Most of the restaurants in town serve chicken cordon blue instead of pork cordon blue. This is another selling point of this stall. The stuffing of the ham and the mayonnaise sauce were same like the usual chicken cordon bleu. Instead of chicken, it was substituted with pork instead.

Grilled Pork Chop – RM8.00, another great delicacy which is hard to get in Penang. The western style pork chop was very tender and juicy. It is a must-try.

Grilled Lamb Chop – RM9.50, this is one of my favorites. I love the way they marinated and grilled the lamb. It was so tender and did not contain much of lamb odour.

The lamb was well-served with the classic mint sauce. It is such an excellent combination.

Grilled Rib-Eye Steak – RM16.00, for beef lovers this is also one of the signature dishes here.

I love the steak preparation to be done in medium rare as you will still taste the juiciness of the meat while the outer layer is almost cooked.

Spaghetti Chicken Bolognese – RM5.00. The spaghetti cooked in minced chicken cooked in tomato-based sauce.

The texture of the spaghetti was just nice and not over-cooked. The taste of the bolognese sauce was very standard. For those who prefer something other than meat, this will be the option.

Overall, the taste of the food here is great. The price of the food is reasonable and the portion given is generous. There are plentiful of parking available here. The only drawback is it is hidden away from the busy town area.

Finding a place that serves nutritious yet affordable Italian food is not easy in Penang. If you still can’t recall one, keep reading this post and you will know below is the place you will be looking for.

The place that I am introducing this round is called Simply Nutritious. It is hidden from the main road. If you are driving from Jalan Dato Keramat, look for the signboard to turn into Lebuh Melaka and keep driving for about 100 meters. Look on your left and you will find a small shop with a banner called Simply Nutritious.

The shop is not very spacious and it can only cater for about 10 tables. However, this restaurant provides a very homey and cozy atmosphere.

Simply Nutritious serves not only nutritious food but even the drinks are also nutritious. Below are some of the famous drinks:

Cucumber Sour Drink – RM3.80

Grapefruit Juice – RM3.80

Cucumber sour drink is made of blended cucumber with sour plum. This drink was very refreshing and appetizing as cucumber can cool down your body temperature while sour plum makes the drink apppetizing.

Besides the cucumber sour drink, there is also another famous drink here which is the grape fruit juice. However, the taste of it is very depending on the fruit itself. Sometimes the grape fruit could be very sourish or at other times you could get very sweet grapes.

Fresh Pumpkin Soup – RM5.80, the fresh pumpkin was blended and cooked with dried squids then sprinkled with spring onion.

The soup was full of pumpkin flavour. The aroma of the dried squid also made this soup very tasty. Moreover, the soup was served in a beautiful bowl which made the soup even more pleasant looking.

Mushroom Cream Soup – RM5.80, the soup was full of chopped mushrooms and topped with spring onions.

The taste of the soup was very thick and creamy. For those that love mushroom soup this is a must try.

Mixed Salad Balsamic and Olive Oil – RM4.80. The salad was made up of romaine lettuce, cucumber and bean sprouts. It was served with some vinegar, seasoning and olive oil as dressing.

Sour, slightly salty and full of fresh garden flavor. It was a very delightful dish for veggie lovers.

Mushroom and Cheese with Spinach Chicken with Mushroom and Wolf Berries Spaghetti - RM12.50. Do not be confused by its long name. It is actually a combination dish. The chicken was covered in sauteed mushroom and spring onion and gratinated with mozzarella cheese. As for the spaghetti, it was pan fried with slices of mushroom, wolf berries and spinach.

You may choose what you would like with the spaghetti. For those that love mushroom the above combination will be very good as both the spaghetti and chicken contained an abundance of mushrooms. It was very delicious.

Parmigiano Fish with Tomato Concasse Spaghetti - RM13.80. The fish fillet was topped with Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese and then gratinated to perfection. As for the spaghetti, it was cooked with red pasta sauce and topped with cheese powder and spring onion.

The fish was coated with a layer of melted cheese and the spaghetti which was cooked in red sauce and sprinkled with cheese powder was appetizing and rich at the same time. This is a perfect selection for cheese lovers.

Overall, this place serves great Italian spaghetti which are also reasonably priced. It is also a place where you could find a selection of healthy drinks. However, there are a few drawbacks as this place is not easy to be located and there are limited parking space and tables in the restaurant.

All the while I thought I knew well enough of the dining locations at famous streets like Burmah Road, Macalister Road and etc. However, I was wrong as I just realized that there is still one hidden place which I had not discovered.

The name of this place is called Santorini. Santorini is actually a volcanic island located in the southern Aegean Sea. This place is very peaceful and quiet. The houses are built with low-lying cubical beside the slope. Although in Penang we can’t experience any Santorini buildings and culture, there is a place where you can get to taste some of the food from Santorini.

Santorini Cafe and Restaurant is located at Burmah Road just a few doors next to CTY Aquarium and also just next to Little Cottage restaurant.

Wall of fame, this wall is contributed by its satisfied customers after their visit to this restaurant.

The layout of the front dining area.

Besides that, there is also a tatami dining area for those who love a Japanese dining experience.

Santorini Drunken Mee Suah - RM6.90. For those looking for healthy food, this is the dish that you should order. The mee suah was cooked in starchy soup. The ingredients consisted of fish fillet, crab sticks, egg and sprinkled with spring onion.

The taste of the soup was very nice as it was cooked with rice wine and it was not salty at all. It is very suitable for those who can’t take hot and spicy food.

Santorini Butterine - RM7.90, the slices of mantis prawn were battered with other ingredients, then deep fried and later pan fried with capsicum cubes, onion slices and sweet and sour sauce. The dish was then topped with a sunny side up egg.

The taste of the mantis prawn was very rice and delicious. The sauce was sweet and sour which made the dish more appetizing. It was a nice dish.

Coffee Chicken Chop – RM13.90, this dish is a fusion western style. The batter had been mixed with some coffee powder and applied on to the chicken thigh before it was brought to the pan to be deep fried. It was placed on top of potato wedges, roman lettuce and pickled olive slices. It was then served together with some mayonnaise sauce.

The aroma of the coffee was very strong which made this signature dish very unique. The coffee taste blended very well with the chicken and was very appetizing.

Oat Fish Chop -RM12.90. The fish fillet was a catch of dory fish. The cooking style is similar to the one above, which was battered then deep fried. Upon completion, it was covered with a lots of oat flakes. Serving together with the dish there was tartar sauce, potato wadges and roman lettuce .

The taste of this oat fish was very nice and pleasant. The crispy batter was full of oats and it was a perfect combination with the tartar sauce. For fish lovers, this dish will certainly satisfy your crave.

Santorini Potato Salad – RM5.00, the salad was made of mashed potato with homemade dressing and topped with oat flour and one piece of tomato and roman lettuce.

Her-Mus-Ney Chicken Chop – RM11.90, the chicken thigh was grilled together with some herbs and was then served with special sauce which was made of mustard and some other secret ingredients. The side dishes were potato wedges and salad.

The grill chicken thigh was so normal, but the sauce was very special. It tasted sweet and sourish which made this dish very appetizing.

Santorini OH! mama – RM8.90, this dish was cooked in claypot with dark sauce. The chicken pieces were braised until very soft. It was then sprinkled with spring onion for a better aroma.

One of the reasons for the name of this dish was it really tasted like mummy’s home cooking dish. The taste of this dish was very nice, as the dark sauce was very thick and delicious. However, if this dish were to be taken separately the taste will be too strong and salty. It was meant to be served together with rice.

Fish Sauce Bee Hoon - RM5.90. The bee hoon was pan fried together with fish sauce. The dish was accomplished with scramble egg, slices of onion, a few prawns and curry leaves.

The look of this dish was like Singapore fried bee hoon but instead of frying with tomato puree, it was cooked with fish sauce and some additional secret ingredients. To me this dish was just at an acceptable level only.

Mixed Grill – RM20.90, this dish consisted of grilled lamb chop, chicken chop and sausage. The side line of the dish were chili, garlic and barbecue sauce.

The taste of the grilled lamb chop, chicken chop and sausage were just normal and the sauce was nothing special as well.

Santorini Seaweed Fried Rice – RM6.90. This was a normal fried rice cooked together with Japanese dried seaweed, carrot slices, some herbs, slices of prawn, bonito flakes and some spring onions.

Not everyone will love the taste of seaweed with fried rice. However, I do love the “fishy” smell of this dish. Besides the fishy smell of this dish, it still tasted as a usual fried rice.

Kampar Yue Wat Soup – RM5.90, this dish was cooked with fish stock, vegetable and homemade fish ball that made of “Taufu fish” meat. This “Taufu fish” was imported from Kampar where this fish is not available anywhere in Penang.

The preparation of this dish is very simple, just a fish stock soup with vegetable and some fish balls. The taste of this dish was simple yet delicious. The texture of the fish balls was so smooth that it really melted in your mouth. The only drawback is that the portion was too little.

Wonder Box – RM6.00, the ice cream with mango and chocolate was placed on a square and thick bread. The ice cream was completed with colorful sugar flakes, chocolate fudge, almond flakes and watermelon balls.

The Wonder Box was colorful and wonderful, the combination of ice cream and the bread was so just like its name, so wonderful. This dish is worth to try out.

Santorini Cracker – RM4.90, the cracker was made of bean curd skin, it was expanded and deep fried until crispy and salty. It was then served together with Thai style chili sauce.

The taste of this food was as spoken, crispy and salty. For those that love saltiness, this is the dish that you would want to order.

Santorini Signature Coffee – RM8.00, this house brew coffee was served with ice, topped with fresh cream and sugar flakes.

The aroma of the coffee was so thick and nice. It really tasted nice together with the fresh cream. I definitely will go back for this drink.

Santorini Thirst Quencher – RM5.00, this drink was made of plum and orange. It will make those sleepy awake and quench their thirst.

Nice drink, but I still prefer the signature coffee, maybe due to I am a coffee lover.

Santorini Chocolate – RM5.50, an iced chocolate drink topped with chocolate chips.

It was a very common chocolate drink, tasted just like Ovaltine drink.

Overall, most of the food here were nice. The ambiance was very cozy. The price here was reasonable. However, most of the food did not match with its restaurant name, “Santorini”. It should have served more Mediterranean and European food. Another drawback is this place lacks of car parks and is not easy to be located.

What is de title of today’s lunch? Well, it is De Title indeed. The title of the restaurant itself is De Title. I might have confused you for so many titles, but the actual name of this place is “De Title Dining Cabin”. The reason of naming the restaurant as “De Title” is that this restaurant will serve you any dish that you name it. From Asian, Western, Mediterranean to even fusion cooking.

It is not too difficult to locate this place. If you are driving from Macalister Road and turn into Lorong Selamat, keep driving for another 200 metres and look out on your right, you will see an outstanding building in purple, which is De Title.

Upon entering the building, there was a cosy romantic feel. It is a very suitable place for couples to dine at.

The second section of the restaurant consists of a buffet corner and a seating area for patrons.

The signboard for the washroom is so unique that the drawing looks very hilarious.

Besides the signboard of the washroom, all the decoration including the windows frame of this place were designed by the 2 founders of De Title.

For those who are bringing guests of 20 pax or more, there are also private rooms available on the second floor of this place.

Homemade Mushroom Soup, with an additional RM1.50 you will get to enjoy free flow of mushroom soup, salad, cake, cookies and ice cream.

The taste of the soup was very creamy and thick, it was full of chopped mushrooms and sprinkled with herbs and some croutons on top. I simply love this mushroom soup.

Seafood Spicy Yaki Udon- RM13.90, the udon was fried together with big prawns and completed with carrot, cabbage slices and some chopped coriander. The taste of the udon was very nice, it was more towards fusion style. It also tasted slightly spicy. This dish was very appetizing.

Japanese Corner

Guangdong Yaki Udon – RM10.90

Seafood Oriental Yaki Udon – RM13.90

Seafood Spicy Yaki Udon – RM13.90

Seafood Black Pepper Yaki Udon – RM14.90

Chicken Ham Pizzailo with Roti Canai Base – RM13.90, if Japanese Corner is not your cup of tea, you may want to consider this pizza. It has thin crust, served with chicken ham on top and covered with cheese and tomato paste.

Choices of Pizzailo

Veggie Pizzailo @ RM9.90

Chicken Ham Pizzailo @ RM13.90

Beef Pepperoni Pizzailo @ RM14.90

Cheese Baked Fusili - RM10.90, if the Pizzailo does not satisfy your crave, there is even a list of other Italian cuisine waiting for you. One of them is the Cheese Baked Fusili. Fusili are long, thick, corkscrew shaped pasta. The word fusilli presumably comes from fusile, archaic or dialectal word for “rifle” (fucile in modern Italian). It was baked together with cheese, minced meat, tomato puree and sprinkled with coriander. The taste of the dish, very Delizioso!!

Italian Corner

Cheese BakedAlla Alfredi – RM10.90

Macaroni Alla Carbonara – RM12.90

Riso Verbo Pollo Alla Carbonara – RM13.90

Pasta – RM13.90

Spaghetti Chicken Bolognaise

Spaghetti Alla Tailandia

Stir Fried Spaghetti Seafood Oriental

Pasta Aglio Olio

Cheese Baked Rice - RM13.90, this dish is very similar to the one at a famous Hongkie restaurant. The rice was mixed with chicken cubes, cheese and some white sauce, it was baked with some chopped coriander. Very rich and tasty dish.

Grilled Chicken with Black Pepper Sauce - RM14.90, the chicken thigh was marinated with homemade black pepper sauce and it was then grilled to perfection. The taste of this dish was hot and spicy. Anyway, this is not my cup of tea as I don’t like black pepper very much.

Western Chicken Corner

Choice of Grilled Chicken or Crunchy Chicken with boiled rice – RM13.90,

with mashed potato / chips RM14.90, extra golden egg – RM1.00

Choice of sauce

Butter Garlic Chicken

Creamy Mushroom Chicken

Oriental Chicken

Spicy BBQ Chicken

Teriyaki Chicken

Grilled Chicken with Creamy Mushroom Sauce - RM14.90, the style of preparation is very similar to grilled chicken with black pepper sauce, the only difference is the sauce. I prefer this sauce more as it does not have the peppery taste as compared to black pepper chicken.

Butter Garlic Crunchy Chicken - RM14.90, the preparation of this chicken is very much different than the previous ones. The chicken was marinated with garlic and butter and deep fried to crunchiness. This dish is not as good as grilled style as the crunchy batter had covered the freshness and original taste of the chicken meat.

Butter Garlic Dory Fish - RM14.90, the preperation of the butter garlic dory fish is similar to butter garlic crunchy chicken, the texture of the fish was very fresh and nice.

Fish Corner (NZ dory)
Choice of Grilled Fish Fillet or Deep Fried Fish Fillet with boiled rice RM13.90, with mashed potato / chips RM14.90, extra golden egg RM1.00.

Choice of Sauce

Black Pepper Dory Fish Fillet

Cheesy Dory Fish Fillet

Onion Gravy Dory Fish Fillet

Teriyaki Dory Fish Fillet

Tomyam Dory Fish Fillet

The Miracles of Devils and Angels, the price depends on the number of people eating it. For those that love this dish please ask for the price from the servers before placing the order.

The reason for the name of this dessert is due to its contradictive taste. First would be the baked dark chocolate which looks like chocolate mud cake. In fact when you sliced it, the dark chocolate fudge will flow out. This dish is hot and rich.

To complement the rich chocolate taste is vanilla ice cream. This will make the treat cold, chill and slightly sweet. The actual way to dine is to mix both of this dish together and you will have the contrast feeling of “angel and devil”.

The picture of 2 founders cum chefs of De Title. Very young and presentable ladies.

Overall, this place is very cozy and suitable for couples looking for some privacy. The price of the food is slightly on the high side. The taste of the food is mostly acceptable. The 2 drawbacks here are lack of parking space and too much of varieties of dish available here. As per saying too many cooks will spoil the soup. They should have some signature dishes so that people will know what to dine there.

Looking for a place for a cup of coffee and some desserts to relax during tea time? There is a new place out of town that you can set your mind free for a while before you continue your hectic life again. The name of this shop is called Full Of Beans.

It is very easy to locate Full Of Beans. This shop is on the first floor and on the left after the main entrance of Straits Quay. Once you reached the first floor, walk towards the end on the left and you will see this shop.

If you are not sure whether you are on the right path to the shop, one of the easiest ways is to follow your sense to the coffee aroma. As you get nearer to the shop, the aroma of coffee also becomes stronger.

All the coffee you ordered will be freshly brewed. You can see the barristers were busying preparing the coffee.

One of the famous brews is Siphon or Syphon coffee. In brief Syphon coffee is also known as Vacuum Coffee. With this process the coffee is prepared with a vacuum coffee brewer (Vac Pot). The water is sucked through the vacuum pot to the top of the container with coffee powder in there, and it is left to cool down. Once it is totally cooled down the liquid that flow down to the pot again will be a nice and tasty coffee.

Besides the siphon method, there is also another unusual way of processing the coffee which is called Iced Drip Coffee or also known as cold brew coffee. It is done by using a pot of water above a bin of coffee grounds and filter, the water will then slowly drip through the coffee grounds at a rate of about two drips per second. This seeps through the coffee and filter, eventually spinning down the condensation tubes and into a waiting beaker. This produces concentrated solution that is stored in the fridge for about 2 days. The coffee is served cold and the taste is a bit sourish as the coffee itself has been fermented.

The price of the coffee as below listed:

Brazil Santos – RM9.50

Mandheling – RM9.50

Mocha – RM9.50

Ice Drip Coffee – RM15.oo

The coffee list above is arranged in accordance to the coffee thickness, from the mildest on top to the thickest at the bottom. If you are a beginner, you should go for Brazil Santos. However, if you want thicker taste and stronger aroma Mandheling is the one for you. The strongest of all would be Mocha. As Ice Drip Coffee, the category is different from the above as this is served cold while the rest are served hot.

At Full of Beans, it is advisable for the coffee to be served without sugar. The reason being is that the desserts served are already sweet and the best to complement with it is pure black coffee. As a complement to Full Of Beans, Sweet Forest is serving all kinds of dessert for the diners to savour.

French Petites For Four – RM1.50 each

Paris- Brest Cycling Race (Filled with vanilla cream & topped with strawberry, kiwi rose berry or other fruits)

Chou Chocolate (Chocolate Cake)

Cappuccino Puff (Filled with cappuccino)

Fruit Tat (Filled with vanilla cream & topped with strawberry, kiwi rose berry or other fruits)

For these four options, I personally love Cappuccino Puff. The taste was not too sweet yet with slight bitterness from the Cappuccino which was more appetizing.

French Macaroon – RM2.50 each, French Macaroon is a sweet confectionery made with egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring. The common available flavors are as below:

Green Tea

Orange

Mocha

As for Franch Macaroon, I love the orange flavor as the scent of orange and sourness as they made me feel refreshing. However, these Macaroon are slightly on the sweet side with is not really my cup of tea.

Semolina Cake - 6” RM35, 9” RM58, currently at this moment all cakes sold at Full Of Beans are not served in slices yet as this place still needs a fridge to keep them.

The taste of Semolina was very nice. However, it was very rich and I could only manage to finish one slice of it.

Strawberry Layer Cheese Cake - 6” RM42, 9” RM75, The cheese cake was made in layers with cheese in between and cookie base at the bottom part. On top it was covered with strawberry fruits and on the side was full of almond flakes.

The cake was very fruity and nice. However, there was still lack of lemonade touch that would otherwise make the cake more appetizing.

Pandan Layer Cheese Cake 6” RM42 9” RM75, the cake was made with pandan, layered with cheese and with cookie base. The side of the cake was covered with coconut slices.

I love the scent of pandan. However, I didn’t really fancy about the coconut. This is not my cup of tea.

For those who are interested in ordering the cake and pastry, please refer to below contact for reservation:

Sweet Forest - 0124765970 / 0164936640

Overall, the place is very cozy and is great for relaxation. The price of the coffee here is about the standard of starbucks but the varieties are more. There also serve desserts to complement with the coffee which are dedicated to those who have a sweet tooth.

For those who love to chill out with friends for a mug or two, you will surely know where is SOHO FREE HOUSE at Penang Road (UPR) which is one of the hang out places in town for the night owls.

I have always thought that SOHO is a place for drinking and chit chat, never did it cross my mind that it serves good food. Thanks to Sam Ong who introduced this place to me.

Upon entering SOHO, you will see people hanging around talking and laughing with mostly a mug on their hands. There are even pool tables at the back of the pub for those that love to cue.

SOHO Free House doesn’t mean that the things here are FREE of charge. The actual meaning is it is a place to be free from the hustle and bustle of your daily life, to catch up with friends and enjoy a quick bite.

Where else, SOHO Penthouse is just on top of SOHO Free House. The SOHO Penthouse’s is a favorite chill out area among the urban crowd looking for a place to relax and away from the hectic weekend crowd.

For those that looking for a place that is not so crowded, SOHO Penthouse is an ideal choice for you.

The grand and beautiful chandelier hanging on the ceiling of the stairway to SOHO Penthouse.

One of the attractions here is the Kilkenny Draft Beer. Due to the high demand and also the crowd here, Kilkenny served at SOHO is very fresh and smooth.

For non-alcohol lovers, you can always go for their refreshing fresh fruit juice.

Traditional Shepherd’s Pie (Chicken) - RM7.80. The pie was cooked with chopped chicken or mutton that had been well marinated with home mixed ingredients included LP sauce. It was then covered with mashed potato and baked to perfection. The side dishes were green beans and slices of red cabbage and carrot.

The marinated chopped chicken/ mutton blend was very smooth and it blended very well with the mashed potato on top. This is one of my favorites. I have been returning for this dish for the 3rd time.

Homemade Burgers (Beef/ Chicken) - RM7.80. The patty of the burger was made of chopped meat which was well marinated with home made sauce which included LP sauce. The patty was than grilled and served with tomato, onion, cucumber and lettuce slices. The side dishes were fries, red cabbage and carrot.

If I would say Traditional Shepherd’s Pie is my first choice, this will be my second choice. In fact, I love both of these dishes. The meat was so juicy and flavorful. The combination of the meat and veggie was excellent.

Roast Herb Chicken - RM7.80. The roast chicken was well marinated with herbs. It was served together with homemade gravy, mashed potato and also slices of carrot and red cabbage.

If I had the option of pie and burger, I would prefer not to choose roast chicken. However, the aroma of the herbs was so nice and the taste of the gravy was not too salty and delicious. The meat of the chicken thigh was soft after marinated and roasted. Another nice dish which was simply irresistable.

Bangers ‘N’ Mash - RM7.80, also known as sausages and mash. It is a traditional English dish made of mashed potatoes and sausages and then covered with gravy. The side dish was green peas.

The size of the banger was big and the was about 9 inches long. The taste of the banger was the usual sausage type whereas the mashed potato was acceptable.

SOHO Speghetti (Chicken) - RM7.80, the spaghetti was covered with bolognese sauce and minced meat. It was finished with some chopped coriander. The cheese powder was served separately.

I am not a big fan of pasta, but the spaghetti was good.

For each of the set ordered, it will be served together with the tray of seasoning as below.

Overall, the food here is unexpectedly good. This place is mostly suitable for drinking and chill out. There are many parking area surrounding SOHO but the rate of the car parks are quite expensive during night time. This place is not suitable for children as the whole place is a smoking area. They should provide a non-smoking corner and some private rooms.

Looking for a place to grill and chill at the same time? If you are working near to the town area of Penang and you love to have a mug or two after work along with some meals to satisfy with, there is a place that will fulfill these needs.

The name of this place is called “Chicago Rib House”. The location of this place is not difficult to locate. Once you know how to go to Gurney Plaza, you will surely know how to go to Chicago Rib House. The reason is Chicago Rib House is just at the al fresco dining area of Gurney Plaza. For those who love some grills and chills, this would be the perfect choice for you.

CHEESE NACHOS – RM14.90, this is for the cheese lovers. The mixed cheese was spread across all the tortilla chips and it was baked to perfection. It was then served together with salsa sauce. The taste of the salsa was slightly spicy and sourish while the tortilla chips with cheese were rich and creamy. Both of this combination made this entire dish a masterpiece.

BUFFALO WINGS – RM19.90.

HOT BUFFALO WINGS – RM19.90

SWEET HOT BUFFALO WINGS – RM19.90

Besides the Cheese Nachos, another famous finger food at Chicago Rib House is the buffalo wings. There are 3 types of flavor available for the buffalo wings. First is the original buffalo wings. The marinated chicken wings were deep fried and coated with honey barbecue sauce. This flavor is suitable for kids and non-spicy lovers.

For those who love spiciness and excitement, you can always order hot buffalo wings or sweet hot buffalo wings. Most of the process of preparation will be the same as the original flavor of buffalo wings. The only difference is the marination sauce is spicy or hot and spicy Thai sauce. The buffalo wings were also sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds.

As for me, I still prefer the original version of buffalo wings. It could be the original flavor is more suitable to barbecued than the spicy one.

Chicago Ribs House is introducing a whole new range of pastas.

One of them is SHRIMP OLIO – RM30.90. The ingredients of this pasta consist of olio, shrimps, spices, chili flake, chopped coriander and olive oil.

This dish was full of shrimps. For seafood lovers this is a must order dish.

COUNTRY FRIED PORK – RM28.90, country fried pork is a new steak selection on the menu. This new dish is specially dedicated to pork lovers. The pork chop was fried until crispy, it was then topped with homemade creamy gravy and cheese. The side dishes consisted of mashed potato and pan-fried broccoli.

Personally, I feel that the texture of the fried pork chop was great. However, the taste of the gravy did not really blend in well with the meat. The taste of the gravy was rich, salty and creamy, but it was not appetizing. If this dish was added with a touch of lemonade with a slight soury flavour it would taste better.

CHICAGO’S PORK RIBS WITH GRILLED SALMON – RM49.90, this dish is the combination of pork ribs with grilled salmon. The ribs were marinated and grilled till slight crispy with a nice aroma, it was then covered with barbecue sauce. The grilled salmon was served fresh with a slice of lemon as a garnish. The side dishes were sweet corn and risotto.

The grills were excellent. The only drawback is the barbecue sauce of the ribs were on the sweet side. For the non-sweet lovers, this might be a challenge.

TORTILLA SALAD – RM25.90, the salad consisted of tomato, onion, roman lettuce and some chopped coriander. They were then placed in a crunchy deep fried tortilla that looked like a bowl. It was then topped with the grilled chicken slices.

The combination of all the ingredients that made up this dish was excellent. The fried tortilla was not too oily yet the salad was very appetizing. It is one of my favorites.

STRAWBERRY LEMONADE (Left) – RM7.90, one of the new beverages on the menu is the strawberry lemonade. The drink is a combination of sprite, strawberry and lemonade. The taste of this drink was a bit like cough mixture. This is not my cup of tea.

TROPICAL ORANGE FREEZE (Right) – RM8.90, the other new beverage that was served on the menu is the tropical orange freeze. The drink was an ice blended drink made of orange, pineapple and coconut milk. This drink was great, but if the coconut milk could be replaced with full cream milk, that would be even much better.

CHOCOLATE MUD PIE – RM14.90. One of the grand finale of this meal was the chocolate mud pie. The base of the pie was cookie base, topped with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, then covered with almond flakes, chocolate powder and chocolate mud.

I always feel that dessert is the most important of the entire course. The reason being is if the dessert is good, it would make up for the previous dishes. Anyway, the pie was not very sweet. It tasted both hot and cold, sweet and slight bitterness. This dessert is a must-order on my next visit.

Overall, the taste for the new dishes were good, yet there are some still have rooms for improvement. The price is slightly on the high side. The ambiance is suitable for family and friends and there are sufficient car park lots at Gurney Plaza, provided that you are there at the right time. They have free WIFI available and customers are welcomed to bring their own liquor with no corkage. The finale of the dessert, which is the chocolate mud pie is a must try item.
