Tang Yuan (汤圆) is the sticky glutinous rice ball cooked in sweet-flavoured pandan water. These rice balls are symbolic of completion, happiness and fulfillment and that’s why it is also served in certain festive seasons in the Chinese Community. However, this Tang Yuan is only available during special occasion. Therefore it is not easy to get this dish on normal days.

However, if you do not wish to wait to savour this dessert only on special occasions, there is a stall at town area that sells this dessert 5 days a week. The name of this stall is Tang Yen (甜汤圆) and it is located just opposite of Traders Hotel at Jalan Magazine.

Tang Yen stall, has been selling Tang Yuan for many years and the glutinous rice balls are prepared as per order. Therefore, the taste of it is very fresh and chewy. In fact, there are 2 types glutinous rice ball for you to choose - small sized or big sized. For big-sized, there are 2 types of filling, you can opt for either black sesame or peanut. As for the soup, there are 2 types as well, the gingered brown syrup and the plain syrup. Price ranged from RM2.00 – small, RM3.00, RM4.00/ RM5.00 – large.

The soup of gingered brown syrup is as pictured below. The soup is cooked with ginger, brown sugar and some pandan leaves for fragrance. The smell of the ginger is very strong. You could smell it even from far.

Besides the ginger brown soup, the other soup is the plain syrup which is cooked with sugar and pandan leaves. The smell is not as strong as the ginger brown soup and the taste is more plain. However, I prefer this soup over the gingered one due to its simplicity in taste and it doesn’t contain the spiciness of the ginger.

The filling with black sesame. It is not too sweet and is full of sesame aroma. This filling is prepared for those who are health-concerned as the carbohydrate content is not as high as peanut’s.

As for the peanut filling, the peanuts were chopped till fine and it tasted rich and delicious. I prefer this peanut filling even though it is not as healthy as black sesame filling.

Overall, the stall here serves a very traditional type of savor and the taste is exactly like home-cooking style. The price of the dish is very reasonable and the portion provided is quite big. However, the drawback is there are not many parking space available around the stall. Sometimes, the hygiene of this place is also a concern. I had once faced the server dipped her finger into the soup when serving.

Ever since the cable car of Penang Hill was upgraded, locals and foreigners were seen dashing to the railway station to take a ride on the new funicular train. As expected, there was a long queue waiting to enter the station especially due to the long weekends .

The wait for the cable car was about 20 minutes. Whereas the ride of the journey to the destination takes only 4 minutes. My suggestion to those wanting to visit Penang Hill, do it during the non peak season or on weekday to avoid the crowd.

Nevertheless, we had a comfortable ride up to the hill this time. Imagine in those days we had to pack with the crowd and squeezed ourselves in the non-air-conditioned cabin. Not to say that we had to change train on the mid hill. Now, with the new funicular train it is a non-stop journey straight up to the hill. All the cabins are fully equipped with air conditioning and the ride is far more quiet and faster compared to the previous one.

Ticket for the Funicular Train to Penang Hill :-
MYR4.00 for adults (one way)
MYR2.00 for children (Below 12 years old)

The train operating hours is from 7.00 am to 11.15 pm.

After arriving at the destination, you will see a beautiful aeriel view of Penang island. Although the climate these days is hotter compared to those days, the fresh breeze and the cooling air still make this place a relaxing one.

One of the attractions on top of Penang Hill is the smoke house that has been well kept and restored to its previous glory. The name of this place is David Brown’s Restaurant and Tea Terrace. This restaurant is in association with The Smokehouse Cameron Highlands. This house was built during pre-war time. David Brown’s offers a view of almost every significant landmark of the island.

The well-manicured garden with iconic lily pond sets the scene for dining in the garden. The seats for garden dining is catered for 50 guests or more.

The furnishing with the elegant English style is still well preserved.

The fireplace to keep warm is still standing at the side of this house.

The Smokehouse Cream Tea – RM28. Pot of tea, slice of fruitcake and 2 scones with homemade strawberry preserve and cream.

This set caters just enough for a person. The scones tasted fresh from the oven. The scones didn’t include any raisins. For raisin lovers, this wouldn’t satisfy you. However, for the fruit cake served, you will have all the bites with preserved fruit and raisin.

The cream that served together with the scone was so soft and creamy. I just love this.

The aroma of tea was very smooth and refreshing. It didn’t taste like the usual tea bag from the supermarket.

The splash of the pouring tea let out its wonderful tea aroma. Nice.

For side orders, a choice of sandwich will be as good to fill you up. The list of sandwiches are as below:

Club RM30

Steak RM30

Smoked Salmon RM30

Roast Beef RM28

Roast Chicke RM18

Cheese RM18

Tuna RM18

Tomato RM16

Cucumber RM16

Egg RM16

I ordered myself a set of tuna sandwich. The taste of this sandwich was normal but the fries were fresh from the pan.

Overall, the ambiance here is very cozy and it seems like turning back the time to pre war period, no hassle and no rush. The price of the food here is averagely high, while the taste of the food here is acceptably good. The only drawback is queuing up for the funicular during public holiday or festive season will be a headache.

Straits Quay is the latest hangout in Penang. This place is packed with people from all walks of life especially on weekends.

The decoration of Chinese New Year is still around although it is already over 3 weeks.

Straits Quay is located at Seri Tanjung Pinang. The place is part of the development project by E & O group, the master-planned of waterfront community on Penang’s northeast coast.

Not to introducing too much on Strait Quay, actually my main focus today is how to eat and drink like a German? There are quite a number of places in Penang that serve German food. However, some places only serve specific dishes on a particular day of the week, which lacks of flexibility for the customers. Whereas some do not emphasize on ambience and play Chinese and Korean songs instead. Not to mention most of them are so pricey that my pocket is bursting out with blood after dining there.

The place that I am introducing below serves every dish round the week, plays nice German music at an affordable price and most importantly, they serve German draft beer.

It is not difficult to locate Berlin’s Bier Houz. Once you have arrived at Straits Quay main entrance turn to right wing and walk for another 30 meters on the outer corridor and you will soon see a shop with a big Lowenbreu logo in front.

There are few sections at Berlin’s Bier Houz, the first section is the pub area where there are high tables and chairs. It is designed for drinking session.

The second section is the dining area for customers to enjoy their meals. Obviously the dining tables and chairs are lower.

The third third section is the outdoor dining area which is also the smoking area. It is just beside the quay where you will be able to view the scenery.

The menu of Berlin’s Bier Houz.

Lowenbrau Original (1 pin) – RM30. To drink like a German, firstly you need to love the German Beer. The beer is very smooth and the bitterness of this beer is much lesser compared to some of the commercial beers around. The beer has slight sweet ending. Anyway, with such a hot weather recently, this beer really chills the throat down.

Ice Blended Cappucino/ Chocolate – RM10.00. For those teetotaler, you might want to consider the ice blended drinks here. This beverage is so thick with chocolate and it is topped with cream and some chocolate topping. Slurp.

German Pork Knuckle Whole RM43.00; 1/2 portion RM25.00. To eat like a German, you need to enjoy pork as Germans are No. 1 pork consumer in the world. However their steak are much degraded compared to other European Countries.

The picture shown below is actually 1/2 portion of the pork knuckle. Just imagine if you ordered the whole portion, you can eat it for 2 days. The way of preparing the German style pork knuckle is first marinate the pork with salt, pepper, caraway and crushed garlic. It is then transferred to a roasting pan to cook and later to oven to grill.

The tenderness of the inner part of the pork was slightly chewy, while the outer part was very crunchy. The meat was a bit dry overall but the taste was great and the portion was huge. The is one of my favorites.

Pork Burger with Cheese – RM16.80. Marinated minced pork patty coated with cheese, topped with lattuce, pickled zucchini and chuck of fries.

The pork patty was so juicy and tender. It really mixed well with the sourness of pickled zucchini which boosts the appetite of dinning, while the melted coating cheese made the burger rich and tasty. The taste of this dish is a thumbs up. The only drawback is the portion provided is way too small and it is only 3-4 mouthful for me.

Berlin’s Special Pork Ribs – RM27.80. richly marinated pork ribs with spices and slowly smoked. It is topped with their homemade barbecue sauce while served with mashed potato, some lettuce, broccoli, tomato and some corns as garnish.

The tenderness of the meat was medium soft, the aroma of the spices was nice while the sauce blended very well with the meat.

Grilled Pork Chop – RM25.80. Grilled pork chop with apple sauce, together it was served with meshed potato, some lettuce, broccoli, tomato and some corns.

The tenderness of the meat was nice but the apple sauce didn’t blend in very well with the pork chop and the taste was just normal. Again, the portion was too small that I can finish in 3 – 4 bites.

Overall, the ambience and atmosphere is very classy and relaxing. It is a good place to hang out with a few friends after work. As for the food here, you need to be wise in ordering your food. Some of the dishes are worth the money and tasty while others are in small portion yet the taste is not up to par. For those who are planning to visit this place during Friday or weekend dinner time, please call for reservation. Most of the time this place will be full.

It was a sunny day during the invitation of Strada Caffe to all the Penang Food Bloggers for food review. It has been a very long time since we had this huge gathering.

Although the dinner started on Saturday, 6pm, it was still very hot and sunny out there just like in the noon and many floggers (food bloggers) were busy taking photos on the surrounding.

Strada Caffe serves not only beer and liquor for the people who come to watch football matches…

…they also serve coffee of all ranges for the people who come to this cosy place as a gathering and reunion.

Before the review session began, the owner of Strada had re-emphasized that this place is not meant for fine dining or very delicious food. Instead, this place is more for people to relax, having a cuppa and also some light food.

After the speech, followed by a solo unplugged guitar performance by one of the shareholders.

Besides the usual coffee bean range, Strada Caffe also provides the precious Kopi Luwak or Civet Coffee. Civet coffee, is a coffee made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract. A civet eats the berries for their fleshy pulp. In its stomach, proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans, making shorter peptides and more free amino acids.

Green Garden Salad – RM8.90, the dish was mixed with lettuce, capsicums, onions, croutons, sun flower seeds, eggs and smoked chicken. Finished with house salad dressing. The taste of this green salad was very green indeed and was an acceptable starter.

Seafood Chowder in Bread Bowl – RM15.90. Chunks of seafood were simmered with potatoes, onions, celery, real heavy cream and a touch of butter and served in bread bowl. This dish was very special, but I feel that the price is slightly on the high side.

Kung Pao Chicken – RM9.90. Stir fried with kung pao sauce, served with cashew nuts, sunny side up egg, prawn crackers and rice. It tasted spicy and sourish.

Kam Heong Seafood Combo – RM8.90. Stir fried with kam heong sauce, served with prawn crackers, sunny side up egg and rice. This dish was more spicy compared to Kung Pao.

Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice – RM8.90. Served with prawn crackers, sunny side up egg and chicken wing. The salted fish fried rice was tasty.

Bao Zhiang Mien – RM11.90. Noodle in house-blended gravy, with minced chicken and 3-colored vegetables. The mixture of the gravy and the cold vegetable didn’t really blend well. In fact, after mixing the ingredients together the taste became cold compared to warm. It is not my cup of tea.

Tomyam Seafood – RM8.90. A choice of bee hoon or instant noodles. The taste was more spicy than sour. This is not my cup of tea either.

The Barista was preparing the brew of latte.

A nice decorative cup of latte.

Different types of decoration on the coffee.

Besides coffee there are many types soda and cocktails available.

Strawberry Kiss Frappes – RM8.90. A very standard strawberry milk shake.

Fluffy Hot Chocolate – RM6.90, the chocolate flavor is not strong enough. It would be better if the chocolate taste is stronger.

Choco Banana Frappes – RM8.90, acceptable drink for chocolate + banana milkshake.

Chocolate Chips Frappes – RM8.90. Rich and nice chocolate chip milkshake.

All this while I have been looking over to Butterworth from Penang island to enjoy its beautiful sea view and sunrise. I seldom get the chance to view from the mainland side.

This time there is a place where we can get not only nice view but also the pleasure of eating and relaxing at the same time. This place is ideal for couples searching for romantic place for dining as well as for those who want to buy dinner for family and friends. It a perfect place to view sunset over the Straits of Malacca.

This place is very near to the port where all the fishermen stop their boat. You can count on them for fresh seafood.

In fact, you could also spot some fishermen fishing by the rock side using fishing rod. Even though the catch will not be much, the enjoyment of fishing counts.

Other than the great scenery, this place is famous for its fresh seafood. If you are heading from North South Express, turn to Jalan Besar and Pacific will be on your left. Keep driving and you will eventually pass through the toll for Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) with Prai exit. The toll collection is RM1.30. Once you are out at Butterworth you will keep using the BORR until Bagan Ajam exit and you need to pay RM1.20 to exit. Follow the exit sign of Pantai Bersih and you will soon reach a few seafood restaurrants. One of them is Ah Chong Seafood (阿仲海边海鲜).

From the sign board below you will notice that the name of this shop is Kantin (Canteen) Ah Chong. The reason being that it was once a temporary canteen for the fishermen.

This restaurant is very spacious and can cater up to 30 tables.

Fresh Grained White Nutmeg Juice – RM15.50, this 1.5 liter drink is more than enough to be shared by 4 people. It was a very refreshing and cooling drink. The drink was not too sweet and was just nice for me. However, the price for this big bottle of drink is slightly too high for an average family.

Other than the usual drink the lady boss of this shop was promoting an enzyme dragon fruit drink stored in a wine bottle. The taste was a bit fermented and tasted like wine. However, there is not alcohol content in this enzyme drink.

Spicy Fried Asparagus – RM8.00, the asparagus was fried together with chili and prawns. The spiciness level was just nice. The gravy was slight sweet and sour and it was delicious.

Claypot Beancurd – RM6.00, it was cooked with green beans, carrot and mushrooms. The gravy was very thick and tasty. Another recommended dish.

Guinness Chicken – RM8.00, the chicken was marinated with Guinness Stout and cooked with dark sauce and some dried chili. The tenderness of the chicken was so soft and flavourful after marinated with stout. The gravy blended well with the meat. It was an excellent and unique dish.

Teochew Style Steamed Garupa – RM34, the garupa was steamed in teochew style with sour and spicy flavour. It was sprinkled with plenty of coriander. The fish was very fresh and worth the price for such a big portion.

Overall, the dishes here are great and worth the money. There are plenty of car park spaces available. With the nice sea breeze it makes the overall dining experience a relaxing one. However, on the downside the price of the homemade drink is slightly expensive. Other than that, it is definitely worth a try for those looking for good “chu char”.

Sakae teppanyaki and Izakaya at Auto city is one of the restaurants with two dining concepts. You might be asking what is the meaning of 2-in-1 dining concept? In short, it means you can try out the sushi and cocktail @ Sakae Izakaya. While if you are a teppanyaki lover, you can always dine at Sakae Teppanyaki counter and let the “Show” chefs amaze you with the entertaining and sizzling cooking.

Locating this place is not very hard. If you know how to go to Auto city @ Prai, Penang, you will sure know where is Old Town at Auto City. Keep driving through the end, you will come to Starbucks coffee. Turn right and you will see Sakae Teppanyaki & Izakaya is just in front of you.

Upon entering the main entrance, you will see the grand and exclusive chandelier hanging at the middle of the hall.

There are many teppanyaki counters at the ground level, where “show” chefs will perform “live” cook of the teppanyaki in front of the audiences.

As for starter, Fei Fei from PenangTuiPui was invited to demonstrate how to prepare teppanyaki fried rice. The ingredients are simple, they are rice, garlic, egg, shojiu (Japanese Wine) and shoyou (Japanese Soya Sauce). Although it looks easy, but you need some skills on the ingredient measurement, duration of cooking each of the ingredient as well as the presentation. Therefore, a master of Teppanyaki takes 2 weeks just to learn how to cook a teppanyaki fried rice.

Besides Fei Fei,Cariso also had the chance to perform her skill of frying teppanyaki fried rice in front of us.

Lingzie also tried out her “flying egg” skill with the teppanyaki kimchi fried rice in front of us.

If anyone would like to learn how to cook a good teppanyaki fried rice, remember to look for Cariso. Cariso’s Brand fried rice, your excellent choice of dish.

If I didn’t tell you which fried rice is cooked by whom you will not notice the difference. However, the one below was the one that cooked by the chef.

And this one is by Cariso.

At the ground floor, besides the main hall with teppanyaki counters, there are also private rooms which can cater about 10pax each for private functions.

Other than the ground floor which serves teppanyaki, the first floor is created for a more intimate ambience. This place is out of the sizzling and hot teppanyaki stove. It the Izakaya sushi and cocktail bar.

A row of shojiu’s….

After all, we should leave sushi to the pro to make instead of an amateur like me.

Overall, the ambiance here is very nice and cozy. Most of the food are delicious and luscious. The service here is great. The price is worth the money for the environment and service. The only drawback is the air conditioning of this place is not evenly distributed. Anyway, the management is looking into this matter seriously.

(Latest Update: This Place Had Stopped Operation on (12/01/10) Due to Some Business Issue.)

Looking for a place which serves more than just Penang food and which is less crowded yet with plentiful of parking space? A place which is romantic enough to spend some quality time with your special ones and where the food is great and price is affordable?

It is not easy to find such place with all the requirement above. However, this time I managed to discover this place which is Brown House. The location of Brown House is very easy to be spotted. It is located just opposite 1-stop Midlands Park Complex in Pulau Tikus.

The building is a big mansion with huge parking space.

Ground floor, the common dining area which is fully air-conditioned.

First floor, with private rooms as well as open-space dining area.

Main Courses:

Pork Chop – RM17.90, this is one of my favorites. Although it may have the plain Jane look, but the taste was definitely not plain. The pork chop was marinated with lemon grass and spices. It was than deep-fried and served with fries and salad. The crust was very crunchy while the meat was very soft and juicy. Therefore, never judge a book by its cover.

Kampong Nasi Lemak – RM7.20, other than the “plain look” pork chop, Kampong Nasi Lemak is also one of the tasty dishes. The curry chicken had a very strong curry aroma, while the level of spiciness was not too over whelming. It was a great combination with the coconut milk rice (nasi lemak), anchovies (ikan bilis), half boiled egg, fried peanut and spicy condiment (sambal).

Hanoi Roll (5 pcs) – RM11.90, These are the deep-fried spring rolls stuffed with meat. It went well with the chili sauce provided. It was a nice and delightful starter.

Puff Pastry Chicken Stew – RM12.90, the best part was the hot and crunchy pastry, when dipped into the soup it became semi-crunchy. The taste of the soup was not as thick and rich as the usual chicken mushroom soup. It was a fusion style of soup and definitely a pleasant starter.

PHO Beef – RM10.90. Compared to puff pastry chicken stew, I still prefer the chicken stew. Although this is an authentic Vietnamese food with tasty beef slices.

Braised Pork Ribs with Nuts – RM10.90. The pork ribs were braised until the meat turned soft. It had a nice aroma from the nut which were boiled together with the ribs. Still puff pastry chicken stew is my favourite.

Ee Chee Lou Fun – RM10.90, exclusively Hong Kong style, rice pagoda on shark’s fin soup. The shark’s fin soup was the usual one that we tried had at any Chinese restaurants while the rice was fragrant rice. There is a slight drawback on the shark’s fin as it was slightly overcooked and the texture became too soft without the bouncy “Q” feeling.

Baked Macaroni Cheese – RM12.90. Nicely baked macaroni and minced meat, it mixed really well with the paste. However, if you are a cheese lover you may not enjoy the mild cheese slices used on this dish.

Starters:

Potato Skin – RM11.90, the potato filling was removed and potato skin was used to stuff in minced meat with potato paste and topped with cheese. The drawback is also same as the baked macaroni cheese - the misuse of cheese type.

Arabian Toast – RM3.60, the unique factor was on the toast itself while the kaya and butter was just the usual stuff. The toast was crunchy and with some sweetness on the toast itself.

Potato Wedges with Paprika – RM6.90, The potato wedges were dipped with paprika powder which tasted like curry powder, then topped with mayonnaise. The taste is acceptable as starter.

Hot and Spicy Chicken Wing – RM11.90, this hot and spicy chicken wing has the taste of KFC, very suitable for kids who love crunchy and spicy chicken.

Honey Chicken Wings – RM11.90. For kids that don’t enjoy spicy food, honey chicken wings is another option.

Drinks:

Curacao – RM7.20, one of the very unique drinks. The color of the drink was blue with some lemon slices. The taste was surprisingly good as I thought all the while drinks with such color will have the taste of detergent. But not for this one.

Full Moon – RM7.20, it looked like the moon was on top of the white cloud. This ice blended drink is to wake someone up when he feels sleepy. It was sweet and sour. It is also a preferred drink for ladies who care about their diet.

Other varieties of drinks are also available as below:

Ice Honey Lemon – RM3.60

Ice Lemon Tea – RM3.60

Ice Jasmine Tea – RM3.90

Ice Traditional Coffee with Milk – RM3.30

Ice Milk Tea – RM3.30

Strawberry love – RM7.20

Overall, this is a very new and uncrowded place. For those who always travel outside and need a place for shelter or internet access, this is the place for you. Certain food are very good and the price range with such ambience is acceptable.

This is the follow-up post from my previous Melaka Travel Guide where which are the places that must be visit. This is about the food that must be tried when in Melaka. There are 4 types of food that you shouldn’t missed, although some are overrated. Please follow this post to find out more. The usual recommended food in Melaka are as follow:

Melaka Chicken Rice Ball

Melaka Style Cendol

Satay Celup

Portuguese Seafood

Hoe Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball

One of the specialties in Melaka is the Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball. There are a lot of similar chicken rice ball stalls and shops in Melaka. To taste the chicken rice ball, of cause we need to find the most authentic one. One of famous shops is Hoe Kee Chicken Rice Shop.

It is located at the middle of Jonker Street. Usually you will need to queue up for your meal.

The kitchen cum office.

The chef was chopping the chicken.

When the crowd is too much to be coped, the shop will not serve soup.

This place is always packed with people even on weekdays.

The rice is boiled in chicken stock and added in with some chicken oil, salt and flavoured with ginger, garlic and shallot. The rice is then rolled into sphere shape and served with steamed chicken pieces, chicken liver pieces and garnished with cucumber and soya sauce. They also served with chili sauce for those that love spiciness.

The ultimate chicken rice ball. Some people love the the rice to be prepared in ball shape while some love the normal rice type. As for me I love the usual rice type, maybe due to I love the feeling of rice bites.

Steamed chicken which are chopped into pieces.

Fried mix vegetable is also available as side dish.

Overall, the taste of the chicken rice is delicious. The rice is packed with aroma of chicken and the meat of the chicken is fresh. So far, we waited for 15 minutes for the seat. For those who travel from outstation, it is worth the wait. The damage for us at here was RM68 for 6 pax, which was very reasonable.

88 Dessert Cendol and Ais Kacang

After the delicious Melaka chicken rice ball, you can follow the path and walk down the street until you reach No. 88 Jonker Dessert. The place is actually a Museum Cafe where they display some antiques and also serves dessert.

The owner of the dessert stall was very busying slashing the ice in every second. There is no time for him to slow down as the queue is always long.

There are plenty of dessert varieties, from Baba Durian Candol, EPC Cendol to Baba Ice Kacang and Baba Mango Ice Kacang. The price range is from RM1.70 to RM4 per bowl.

The cendol is served with green chendol jelly, ice, santan (coconut milk) and red beans like the usual Penang cendol. The only difference is they served it with thick gula melaka (pulm syrup).

Overall, I find this dessert quite unique and very different compared to Penang Style. I love the taste of Melaka-style Cendol. However, some may still prefer the Penang-style cendol as they couldn’t take the taste of gula melaka.

Capitol Satay Celup

Someone did tell me, if we go to Melaka without trying out the satay celup, he will not join us. Therefore I suggested that we try the most famous stall in town, which is Capitol Satay Celup. However after trying it out, he claimed that he will not try that again next time when visit Melaka.

The reason is due to its extraordinary long queue. Standing for one and a half hours just for the 20 minutes of tastebud-pleasure. It is actually not worth the long wait at all.

Satay celup or satay steamboat is similar to our ”lok lok” in Penang except that it is dunked in boiling satay sauce instead of water. When new customers are seated, an iron pot with satay sauce is then placed in the middle of the table and then bring to boil.

While the satay sauce is still boiling, the staff will keep adding in many ingredients into the sauce like gula melaka and crunched peanut.

The ingredients is then being stirred into the satay sauce.

The choices of sticks range from seafood, meat to vegetable. They come in raw to semi-cooked. Each of the satay stick costs 70sen.

Overall, the satay celop is very unique but it is not worth the wait. If you can’t stand for long and you don’t want to risk your life being knocked down by the cars or standing in the rain, I suggest you to give up and try the one next door. The owner needs to think of some solutions if he doesn’t want to lose his business to its competitors.

Portuguese Seafood

This place serves excellent Portuguese seafood. They offer home-style Portuguese fare. They serve small dishes such as otak-otak (fish cake) to larger dishes like Portuguese-style baked fish.

The location of this restaurant is inside the Portuguese settlement near the port.

One of the best dishes that I have tried in Melaka is the Portuguese style otak-otak. It is not the usual otak-otak that we had in Penang. The taste is more juicy with fish meat and the spices used are very different. It is a must-try dish in Melaka. The most important point is you don’t have to wait for one and half hour for the food.

Fried Kailan in sambal style. Very delicious and the aroma of sambal was very strong. The veggie was also very fresh.

The Portuguese-style baked fish is their signature dish. The fish was very fresh and the marinated spices was hot and spicy. A very traditional way of serving the Portuguese-home-cooked-style dish.

Fried spicy chili clams. There were few big clams mixed with mussels. They were very juicy and tasty clams that mixed well with the chili sauce.

Fried Belacan Sotong in Assam sauce (Fried squid in assam sauce). It is a very uniquely prepared dish that I haven’t tasted in Penang or other places in Malaysia . The gravy was sour with some slightly sweet taste. The squids were cut into slices and it tasted fresh and crunchy.

Overall, it is a must-try restaurant when visiting Melaka. The price for 6 pax with all the dishes above is RM130. The taste was heavenly great with minimum waiting time. The only waiting time is on the food preparation which took about 20 minutes.
