For those who always hunt for Chinese cuisine, surely you will know there is this restaurant which is quite trending in town. The restaurant is no other than Stone Bay.

It is not hard to locate this restaurant. If you are driving through Lebuh Raya Jelutong or Lim Chong Eu Expressway from Penang Bridge heading to town, you will see Shell Petrol Station is on your right before arriving to the exit of Sungai Pinang. Just a few stones throw from the Shell Petrol Station, you will surely see Stone Bay Restaurant is at the same row as the petrol station. To go to this restaurant, you will need to make a right “U” turn under the flyover of the Sungai Pinang exit. Keep driving until you see the Shell Petrol Station on your left, then make a left turn to the row of shoplots and you will find your way to Stone Bay Restaurant.

Claypot Pork Slices Fried with Salted Fish – RM25, the pork slices were marinated with dark soy sauce, together with salted fish, onion, garlic, dried chili, capsicum and some herb leaves. It was then cooked in claypot until dried and thick.

This dish had a very strong aroma of salted fish and herb leaves. It has the combination of dark soy sauce which made it slightly sweet and salty. This dish is very nice and is one of my favorites.

Deep Fried Lemon Honey Chicken – RM25, the chicken were cut into pieces, battered and deep fried. It was than mixed with lemon juice, lemon sauce and honey.

The was a sweet dish overall and the texture of the chicken slices was very crunchy. It is very suitable for kids and children. It is not my cup of tea perhaps due to the sweetness of the dish.

Home Made Two Colored Tofu – RM20, this dish was served in 2 colours of bean curd, one was the usual pale yellow while the other one was in black. The pale yellow bean curd was a homemade tofu which was deep fried before bringing it to steam. The black colored tofu was made of bamboo charcoal. It was then cooked with light soy sauce then topped with dried cuttle fish slices and spring onion.

The usual tofu was crunchy on the outer layer while the inner layer melted in your mouth. On the other hand, the bamboo charcoal tofu was soft all the way. You will feel some texture in the tofu but that is normal as the it is mixture with charcoal. The tofu blended in very well with the aroma of fried cuttle fish and the soy sauce. Excellent dish.

Stir Fried Four Season Sprout with Minced Meat – RM20, a very simple dish with green sprouts pan fried with minced meat and pickled vegetable and soy paste.

The taste of this dish was normal. However, the fragrance of the wok was very nice and the texture of the green sprouts was very crunchy while the sour taste of the pickled vegetable was very appetizing.

Red Snapper Cooked with Sourish Turmeric Curry – RM54, the common name of this dish is also called red snapper gulai tumis. The red snapper fish was steamed with sourish turmeric curry. It was then topped with mint leaves, chili slices and onion slices.

The curry was not very spicy and was slightly sweet. If you are not a sweet tooth or a diabetic, this dish might not be preferable. However, it might be ideal for children.

Roasted Peking Duck, 1/2 portion – RM22, the duck was first marinated then roasted until the skin was crispy.

The skin of the duck was so crispy and with some slight fat which made the overall texture crispy and juicy. It was a very delightful dish. The duck meat blended very well with the sauce provided. This dish is suitable for all range of age in the family. It is also one of my preferred dishes.

Overall, some of the dishes are good but not all. You need to be wise on your choices. As for the pricing all the above dishes inclusive drinks and peanuts is about RM213 inclusive tax. There are plentiful of parking space in front of the restaurant. Pre-ordering for the dishes is advisable as the waiting time for additional dishes during the dining time can take a very long time. The servers here are friendly and approachable.

Loh Mee is one of the top 10 hawker food in Penang. Loh Mee is a bowl of thick, dark-coloured starchy gravy served together with yellow noodle and bee hoon, and with some vegetable and meat.

Loh Mee is common in Penang. However, only a handful of stalls serve good Loh Mee. One of the famous yet delicios shops that serve tasty Loh Mee is at Perak Lane. The name of the coffee shop is Joo Huat. If you are driving from Penang Bridge via Jalan Jelutong, you will come to a 3 way junction. The left turn will be turning to Jalan Tan Sri Teh Hwe Lim, the one next to it will be to Jalan Perak and followed by Jalan Jelutong. Follow Jalan Perak and you will soon drive pass Old Town coffeeshop on your left. Keep looking on your left and you will see Joo Huat Coffee Shop at the corner of shophouses.

The famous Loh Mee stall is just in front of the coffee shop. It is known as Kim Leng Loh Mee. The sighboard of the stall is very significant with a yellow background and red wording.

The Loh Mee has won the appraisal from “Hungry – Food Show by Ah Xian The Celebrity TV Host”. The banner is still displayed beside the stall.

The Loh Mee is priced from RM2.50 (Small), RM3.00 (Medium) and RM4.00 (Big). The default serving is Medium.

The tasty gravy is cooked with pork rib stock, 5 flavor of spices (五香粉) and starched with egg white. A complete bowl of Loh Mee is then served with yellow noodle and bee hoon together with chicken feet, egg, bean sprouts and slices of barbecue pork.

The taste was delicious and had full of pork smell. It was flavoured with spices and the thickness of starch was just nice cover. It is an excellent choice for breakfast.

Overall, the taste of the food was great and the pricing was reasonable. However, the drawback of this place is there are not many parking space and also the coffeeshop is always full. Therefore, for those who want to avoid the crowd please visit this place earlier.

Usually, the area that are most popular for dim sum is located either at town area or Bayan Baru. Therefore, there are not many places in Gelugor or Jelutong which serve dim sum. This is one of the places that my friend brought me for dim sum at Jelutong. Although I have been using this road many times, I didn’t realize that there is a shop by the road side that sells dim sum. The name of this shop is “Kafe Star Garden”.

If you are driving from Jalan Jelutong and pass by the bomba (fire rescue department) on your right, you will soon arrive at a traffic junction. Keep driving for another 5 meters and you will get to turn right, just after the turn you will get to see Complex Sri Wonder on your left. With a walking distance of 5 meters from the complex, Kafe Star Garden is just at the road side of Lorong Perak.

Star Garden is just newly launched and they are opening for business every day.

Upon entering the restaurant, it gives an impression as Old Town and Max Restaurant.

The environment here was still very cozy, in terms of not crowded and not many people know about this place yet.

Variety of Dim Sums available for eat in or take away.

There are also plentiful of outdoor seating for smokers.

The choices of Chinese tea served here were the regular ones that we had at other restaurants. One thing good about this place is the Pu Er Tea (普饵茶) is only RM0.70 per pax with unlimited refill.

Prawn and Pork Dumpling (虾卖). The ingredients include the mixture of prawn and pork, the taste was great.

Shark’s Fin Prawn Dumpling (鱼翅虾餃), the taste of the prawn was still fresh while there were some “shark’s fins” placed on top of the dumpling. Dipping it with the chili sauce was a great combination.

Pork Dumpling (烧卖), the taste was acceptable. The freshness of the pork was still on par while there was no heavy pork smell on the dumpling.

Xiu Long Bao (小笼包) were also available at this place. However, the soup of the bao had dried out and it was not as juicy and tasty. Not sure if this was done on purpose. But from my understanding, in order to make a good xiu long bao, the owner should freeze the meat together with the soup and only wrap it with the skin to be steamed.

Chicken Porridge with Century Egg (皮蛋粥) , same goes to the improvement of this porridge. The taste of this porridge was a bit out and there was no taste of chicken at all although it was a chicken porridge. The owner should have tried to cook the porridge with chicken stock to make the dish more delicious.

Ketchup Prawn Dumpling (茄汁虾饺), this one still has room for improvement. The taste of the ketchup was tasteless, while the dumpling was just a normal dumpling apart from the ketchup taste.

Overall, this place was a very cozy to be and it is still very new as there are not many places in Jelutong that offer dim sum in the morning. The price for all the items above for 3 pax was RM27.70 which is considered as reasonable. Some of the dishes here were very good while some still has room for improvement. The plus point for this place is the tea here is very cheap and smooth, and not to mention that they have free WIFI in the restaurant. However, the drawback is limited parking space from patrons.

The number of Penangites taking beef is very less. Partially due to the restriction of certain religions. I was told by a senior person that if you are a follower of Goddess of Mercy, your prayers will not be answered if you consume beef. I am the one of the followers, but still beef is one of my favorite meat especially when they are cooked in medium rare. No wonder my prayers were not answered when I am asking to be a millionaire.

Though there are many restrictions to beef, there is one good place for beef lovers. In fact, this place serves variety of beef in different dishes and style. The name of this shop is called “Kang Beef House”. It is located at Perak Lane. If you are driving from Penang Bridge to town via Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim, you will come to a junction which will turn left to Perak Road and right to Jalan Jelutong. Take the left turning where you will see the Police station is on your left. Keep driving for another 20 metres and you will see Kang Beef House on your right.

Kang Beef House is located within the town area. It is very easy to be spotted if you are driving via Jalan Jelutong. However, finding a parking space will be a challenge for those who visited this place during dinner time.

Mr. Kang was busy preparing the beef dishes. This beefy business has been passed down from grandfather to father. They were known as the beef specialists.

Crystal Beef Fried Rice (+ Meat Ball Soup) – RM12.80. You might think that this is a very normal fried rice with some slices of beef and some chili and veggie as garnish. However, this is not what you think. There is some meaning for the crystal. The fried rice had the texture of crunchiness rather than the usual rice texture. I have the feeling that the crunchiness of rice is either deep fried rice or dried rice.

Black Pepper Beef – RM15.00 (S), RM28.00 (B), the beef had been sliced into pieces and were fried with black pepper sauce. The tenderness of the meat was soft and the black pepper was not too overwhelming. Although to some the starch might not be enough, but to me the taste was just find and it was delicious.

Crispy Beef Ball (6pcs) – RM4.80. It was quite unique that the meat balls were covered with croutons and flour and then brought to deep fried. Dipping the beef balls with their home made chili sauce was very delightful.

Beef Koay Teow – RM6, 8, 10, 12, 15 is one of the koay teow soup which had a mixture of various beef parts like beef slices, meat balls and some intestines. The bowl shown below was the largest bowl. You can always order for smaller one if you think you couldn’t finish it.

For those that don’t eat beef, there is always other option for you to try out. The Dry Fried Hor Fun Kosong is one of it. There was no pricing available for this dish as they seldom provide this unless requested. This was a purely vegetarian dish. The Hor Fun was fried with mushrooms and bean curd.

Other than all the dishes above the one which is the most famous here is the Beef Steamboat – RM20.oo each person. The soup base of the steamboat was boiled with radish and preserved vegetable. The taste was slightly sour and salty. It was very suitable to be cooked with red meat.

The ingredients for the steamboat include:

Tenderloin, one of my favorites. Texture was soft and tender, tasted great when dipped in the hot steamboat.

Raw Meat

Beef Intestines

Beef Tripes

Sirloin

Beef Balls

Beef Ribs

Enoki Mushrooms

The preparation of steamboat is very simple. First make sure the water is boiled and then place all the meat inside the hot pot and wait for it to be cooked.

For those who do not want their beef slices to be overcooked, use your chopsticks to dip the meat into the pot for 30 seconds.

Steve Kang, one of the marketers for Kang Beef House. Special thanks for his arrangement of this review.

Overall, the food here is nice and the service is great. This place is specially dedicated to beef lovers. However, the price of the beef is a bit pricey compared to pork and parking is a constraint for patrons.

On the list of Penang food the most famous would be Hainanese Chicken Rice. Usually during lunch time the most common food being ordered is Chicken Rice, not to mention that there are few other famous chicken rice stalls that I have been posted in my blog previously. Among them are Kowloon Hainan Chicken Rice Stall, Macalister Road, Mayang Pasir Chicken Rice Stall and so on.

No doubt, I have been writing a lot about chicken rice, from Hainanese Chicken Rice and Oyster Sauce Chicken Rice to Deep Fried Chicken Rice and Malay-style Chicken Rice. However, I have never felt tired of trying new chicken rice stalls and posting them again and again as there are too many delicious chicken rice stalls out there. Most importantly, not only that the stalls serve good chicken rice but they are also value for your money.

The stall that I am going to introduce today is the one that is hidden at the back lane and is located on the ground level of a not very well-known apartment. That particular apartment is located along Lorong Hijau 5, Jelutong. Next to it is another more significant apartment which is Medan Hikmat. The place for great chicken rice is just a short walking distance away.

The restaurant that I mentioned is called Peng Yang Restaurant. It is not a very attractive place but in fact most of the people living at Jelutong will know this place as it was featured in Chinese Press “Kwang Wah Daily” before.

The direction to this place would be easier if you use the flyover from Jalan Masjid to Jalan Tan Sri Teh Hwe Lim, then drive about 300 meters before turning left to Jalan Sri Ibrahim. Drive another 20 meter ahead and turn right to Lorong Hijau 5, watch out on your right hand side, Peng Yang Restaurant is just around the corner.

The one and only stall that sells Hainanese Chicken Rice in this restaurant. Usually the best time to visit is before 12:00 noon, as after that prime time all the chairs will be either fully occupied or there will be long queue waiting for their take-aways.

The owner of this stall is Brother Tong “阿通哥” and has been operating this chicken rice stall for years. Besides the infamous chicken, there is also a great variety of dishes like Barbecue Pork, Roast Pork, Chinese Sausages, Loh Bak, Roast Chicken and Roast Duck.

The price for all the dishes are listed as below:

Normal Chicken Rice – RM2.70

Chicken Drumstick / Chicken Wing – RM3.00

Duck Rice – RM3.20

Duck Drumstick – RM3.70

BBQ Pork Rice/ Roast Pork Rice/ Chinese Sausage Rice – RM3.20

Loh Bak – RM1.60

Vineger Pork Leg – RM5.00 – RM6.00

Instead of ordering all the varieties at once, you can one or more dishes on each visit. This round, I ordered 3 types (Roast Chicken, Barbecue Pork and Roast Pork) with a complementary Assorted Vegetable Soup.

To me, a mixture of roast pork, bbq pork and roast chicken would be the perfect combination. The crispiness of the outer skin and also the meaty junk of the roast pork, together with the sweet and juicy barbecue pork and the soft and delectable roast chicken is simply divine.

The Assorted Vegetable is also my favorite. The soup is not too sour and it has been cooked for long hours with meat and dried chili. The soup is cooked with a plentiful of vegetables. For people who love vegetables and sour taste, it is a soup that should not be missed.

Overall the service here is quick, the taste of the food is good and the portion is worth the price.
