A lot of times, people had been asking me for place that serves halal food and yet it needs to be air-conditioned and stylish? Now there is a place in town that suits the above criterias. The name of this place is called D’Dapor Express.

Direction to D’Dapor is simple, if you are heading to town area via Beach Street, just before arriving the clock tower, you will see a junction that leads to Maybank Georgetown Branch, the name of that road is Lebuh Union. D’Dapor Express is on Logan Heritage Building that is just before Maybank Georgetown branch.

For those who are looking for valuable lunch or dinner, they have special set promotions which will suit your requirement.

The interior decoration of this place is very classic. There are many old time pictures of Penang hanging on the walls of the restaurant.

The dining area is able to cater for 120 pax at 1 time.

Promotion for the month of June is RM19.90 for 3 dishes as shown below (cater for 3 – 4 pax). However, this deal is provided by everyday.com.my. You will need to purchase the voucher from everyday.com.my and you will be entitled to this promotion.

For those that purchase ala carte, the dishes below are priced individually. Famous Kari Kepala Ikan – RM38.00, A hot favorite among locals. Fish head cooked with curry spices, chili, onions and tamarind sauce in coconut milk and served with egg plant, ladies finger and tomato. The taste of the curry was thick, spicy and sour. It was very delicious and appetizing. One of the signature dishes at this restaurant.

Kailan with mushroom – RM8.80, pan-fried kailan, carrot, mushroom, garlic and onion,. It was then touched up with coriander. This dish is catered for everyone in the family, no matter young or old.

Telur Bawang – RM6.50, the eggs were fried together with onion and finished with fried onion flakes. The taste of this dish was acceptable and very homely feeling.

For those that purchased RM19.90 from the previous promotion, you are also entitled to the below additional promotion which is also catered for 3 – 4 pax. This deal is also available from everyday.com.my

Again for those who are not looking for promotion, the usual price is as below.

Udang Buluh Perindu – RM18.00, The prawns were cooked in sourish and spicy curry. They were cooked together with carrot, tomato, spring onion and chili, and sided with slices of carrot and cabbage as salad. The taste of the curry was the usual crab curry type. However the prawns were fresh and overall the dish was very nice.

Ayam pandan – RM12.80, the small pieces of chicken were marinated with ginger, turmeric, onions and garlic, then wrapped in pandan leaf and deep fried. However, the pandan flavour did not manage to blend in to the chicken and the taste was very normal. There is still room for improvement for this dish.

Kari Ketam – RM25.00, the curry of this crab was sour and spicy. It was cooked with pineapple and coconut milk. The taste of this curry was a bit wired as the richness of the coconut milk made the curry thick but at the same time the sourness of the pineapple made the dish appetizing. These 2 ingredients did not blend well together.

Besides the promotion, below are the ala-carte items that are not listed under the promotion. Kari Ayam Kampung Melayu – RM12.80, the traditional Malay style curry chicken. The ingredients of the curry include curry powder, curry, cloves, garlic and turmeric. The taste of this dish was similar to Kurma Chicken. This curry was thick and very nice.

Kerabu – RM8.80, the ingredients of the kerabu include mango, onion, lime juice and some sugar. It was then topped with chili coated with anchovies. I personally feel that the sourness of this dish had overwhelmed the rest of the taste. I still prefer it to be not too sour.

White rice topped with onion flakes was served together with these dishes.

Overall, some of the dishes here are very nice while some still have rooms for improvement. The parking here is limited, but the environment here is very classic and cozy. The service here is acceptable and the price of the dishes here for certain still consider to be reasonable.

Seven Bistro and Restaurant is a new restaurant in Penang. It is not very hard to locate this restaurant at it is settled at Gurney Walk of Gurney Plaza, which is just next to Dome Cafe.

Coincidently, I found myself to have taken only 7 pictures for this post. This is an exact match to the restaurant’s theme “Seven”. In fact, all the side-dishes in the menu are priced at RM7 per dish for all day long.

The restaurant has a very modern and innovative look. Just like many of its neighbours, the restaurant/bistro has indoor and outdoor dining areas. For smokers you have to be seated outside whereas indoor is for non-smokers and is air-conditioned. The indoor dining area can cater for approximately 30 people whereas outdoor can cater for about 20 people.

The price for set lunch is RM11 (set dinner is RM13), inclusive of a fixed choice of main course and soft drink. At such an environment and on a Saturday afternoon, the set lunch is considered cheap. But it all depends on which set that you order.

Grilled Lamb Chop with romesco and mint sauce. This is the most valuable set of all. For those who enjoy lamb, this is a must-order. The portion was quite big as they gave 2 slices of lamb chop. The texture of the lamb is just nice not too over-cooked. Combined with the mint sauce it is a delicious combination.

Pasta with ham in Cream Sauce. The pasta was cooked in cream sauce. All the pasta dishes on the menu are in cream sauce type only and they don’t have any in Napolitan or Bolognese sauce. The taste of this pasta was very standard, with a touch of chives sprinkled on top and some herb powder on the side of the plate.

Chargrilled Chicken Breast with Hand-cut Potatoes, this is the set that is not so valuable. The portion of the breast meat was surprisingly very small, in fact it was much much smaller than the lamb chop. It just needed my 2 mouthful to finish eating the set. However, the taste of this main course was acceptable with some fried potatoes and salad served as side dishes.

Spanish Grilled Chicken. Taste-wise and portion-wise, this set is still reasonable. The Spanish-style sauce went well with the grilled chicken, alongwith some cut potatoes and salad.

The Iced Lemon Tea which was served together with the set lunch.

Overall, the taste of the food here is acceptable. However, some of the main course portion is too little. The place is very cozy and with free WIFI. There are also plentiful of parking space inside Gurney Plaza.

Behind the hill is the sunset. On the other end there was rainbow shining above the hotel which made a very contrast and extraordinary combination.

Besides the food, Hydro Hotel had invited the Ferrari team for their gathering on that night.

The racing queens and the singer were posing to welcome the guests.

The ultimate Ferrari logo.

Overall, there are a lot of varieties for the buffet at the hotel. There are almost 80 over dishes in this buffet, the price is definitely value for money. The taste of the food and service is acceptable. The presentation of the food is remarkable. The only drawback is that the dining area is not air-conditioned. It would be better if it is equipped with air-conditioners rather than normal ceiling fans.

(Latest Update: This Place Had Stopped Operation on (12/01/10) Due to Some Business Issue.)

Looking for a place which serves more than just Penang food and which is less crowded yet with plentiful of parking space? A place which is romantic enough to spend some quality time with your special ones and where the food is great and price is affordable?

It is not easy to find such place with all the requirement above. However, this time I managed to discover this place which is Brown House. The location of Brown House is very easy to be spotted. It is located just opposite 1-stop Midlands Park Complex in Pulau Tikus.

The building is a big mansion with huge parking space.

Ground floor, the common dining area which is fully air-conditioned.

First floor, with private rooms as well as open-space dining area.

Main Courses:

Pork Chop – RM17.90, this is one of my favorites. Although it may have the plain Jane look, but the taste was definitely not plain. The pork chop was marinated with lemon grass and spices. It was than deep-fried and served with fries and salad. The crust was very crunchy while the meat was very soft and juicy. Therefore, never judge a book by its cover.

Kampong Nasi Lemak – RM7.20, other than the “plain look” pork chop, Kampong Nasi Lemak is also one of the tasty dishes. The curry chicken had a very strong curry aroma, while the level of spiciness was not too over whelming. It was a great combination with the coconut milk rice (nasi lemak), anchovies (ikan bilis), half boiled egg, fried peanut and spicy condiment (sambal).

Hanoi Roll (5 pcs) – RM11.90, These are the deep-fried spring rolls stuffed with meat. It went well with the chili sauce provided. It was a nice and delightful starter.

Puff Pastry Chicken Stew – RM12.90, the best part was the hot and crunchy pastry, when dipped into the soup it became semi-crunchy. The taste of the soup was not as thick and rich as the usual chicken mushroom soup. It was a fusion style of soup and definitely a pleasant starter.

PHO Beef – RM10.90. Compared to puff pastry chicken stew, I still prefer the chicken stew. Although this is an authentic Vietnamese food with tasty beef slices.

Braised Pork Ribs with Nuts – RM10.90. The pork ribs were braised until the meat turned soft. It had a nice aroma from the nut which were boiled together with the ribs. Still puff pastry chicken stew is my favourite.

Ee Chee Lou Fun – RM10.90, exclusively Hong Kong style, rice pagoda on shark’s fin soup. The shark’s fin soup was the usual one that we tried had at any Chinese restaurants while the rice was fragrant rice. There is a slight drawback on the shark’s fin as it was slightly overcooked and the texture became too soft without the bouncy “Q” feeling.

Baked Macaroni Cheese – RM12.90. Nicely baked macaroni and minced meat, it mixed really well with the paste. However, if you are a cheese lover you may not enjoy the mild cheese slices used on this dish.

Starters:

Potato Skin – RM11.90, the potato filling was removed and potato skin was used to stuff in minced meat with potato paste and topped with cheese. The drawback is also same as the baked macaroni cheese - the misuse of cheese type.

Arabian Toast – RM3.60, the unique factor was on the toast itself while the kaya and butter was just the usual stuff. The toast was crunchy and with some sweetness on the toast itself.

Potato Wedges with Paprika – RM6.90, The potato wedges were dipped with paprika powder which tasted like curry powder, then topped with mayonnaise. The taste is acceptable as starter.

Hot and Spicy Chicken Wing – RM11.90, this hot and spicy chicken wing has the taste of KFC, very suitable for kids who love crunchy and spicy chicken.

Honey Chicken Wings – RM11.90. For kids that don’t enjoy spicy food, honey chicken wings is another option.

Drinks:

Curacao – RM7.20, one of the very unique drinks. The color of the drink was blue with some lemon slices. The taste was surprisingly good as I thought all the while drinks with such color will have the taste of detergent. But not for this one.

Full Moon – RM7.20, it looked like the moon was on top of the white cloud. This ice blended drink is to wake someone up when he feels sleepy. It was sweet and sour. It is also a preferred drink for ladies who care about their diet.

Other varieties of drinks are also available as below:

Ice Honey Lemon – RM3.60

Ice Lemon Tea – RM3.60

Ice Jasmine Tea – RM3.90

Ice Traditional Coffee with Milk – RM3.30

Ice Milk Tea – RM3.30

Strawberry love – RM7.20

Overall, this is a very new and uncrowded place. For those who always travel outside and need a place for shelter or internet access, this is the place for you. Certain food are very good and the price range with such ambience is acceptable.

Harwicke House has always been an urge for me to drop by for dinner after work. In fact this place is so near to my office by walking distance.

For wine lover, there are var options of wine in their storage.

I was told that the method to taste a good wine is via the below few methods:

Color – For red wine, if the color of the wine is more transparent, meaning that the wine is older

Aroma – If the smell of the wine is stronger the better it is for the wine

Taste – It is very variance for this subject to affect everyone. Generally, Carbonate Merlot will have stronger taste while Shiraz will have lighter taste.

Finishing – The finishing is also marking a lot of points for wine tasting as the finishing are very different from the taste when it just touch down the tongue.

Friulvini Verduzzo (Fizzy) @ RM 55.00. Sparkling like taste for this white wine. For ladies this is their preference. However, for me I felt that this wine is slightly too sweet instead.

This is straw yellow with greenish reflections. Delicate, slightly fruity, pleasantly aromatic. Full-bodied with slightly acidulous flavor. This aperitif wine goes well with first course, with confectionery or fruit.

TerraNoble Sauvignon Blanc 2005 @ RM 63.00

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is yellow colour with some greenish tones. It has intense fruity aroma in tropical fruits, especially pineapples. It’s a very fresh wine, not bubbling, dry and well balanced. It has a good structure and a nice natural acidity which has a long permanence in mouth. Ideal as an aperitif too, with seafood and fish. This wine is drunk best at 7C -8C.

Schubert “Hardwicke Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (Recommended Retail Price is RM 118.00. Promotion Price now is RM 60.00)

Schubert is a new winery in New Zealand. This deeply coloured wine exhibits an intense nose of blackberries, plum and dark chocolate with notes of walnut and spices. Full bodied and extremely well structured with layers of super ripe tannins complemented by a long, sweet and dark fruit filled finish.

For those who enjoy a quieter ambience, this is the great place to be as there are a few private rooms and VIP rooms in this restaurant.

Mon to Sat = Lunch buffet @ 18++. Dinner buffet (including BBQ) @ 38++. No ala carte.

Sunday Buffet = Buffet brunch @ 20++. BBQ Dinner buffet @ 38++. Kids eat for free (limited to 2 per family, below 10yrs old only). Free parking for dinner.

From December 2009 till Jan 2010 is the promotion period to enjoy free flow of non-alcoholic beverages on all buffets.

Overall, the food here is good and reasonably-priced. For wine lovers, this will be like a wine paradise. If only this place has some signature dishes to offer, it will definitely attract more people to visit this place again.

It has been a while since I posted on the Kuala Juru Warung Pak Su. On previous post I have mentioned that Warung Pak Su offered variety of food at a strategic location at the junction of Jalan Juru.

If so, Restaurant Nelayan will be the other way round with great taste and nice scenery. This place is usually packed with people during dinner to supper time. If you want to avoid the crowd, please make sure to be there before 5:30pm.

Just next to the restaurant, there is a great sea view with warm sea breeze.

The shore is made up of sea shells, please mind your steps if you are planning to take a stroll along the beach.

There are also a lot of horseshoe crab in between the seashells.

There is also a port for fishermen to load their catch.

The catch for the day, clams, clams and clams again.

The fisherman was busy loading their catch.

The clams were placed in the bucket and were ready to be processed.

The job of cleansing the clams have been made easy with the usage of this machine.

The exterior view of Restoran Nelayan Kuala Juru, a place for seafood and Thai cuisine.

The side entrance of Restoran Nelayan, the look of the entrance is very country-style.

One of the staff was preparing our food.

All the while I thought the prawns used to cook mee udang are Tiger Prawns. However, the truth is ”Udang Hijau” (Green Prawns) are the one being used to cook Mee Udang.

Mee Udang RM6.00 (Prawn Noodle), the gravy had a very strong taste of prawn, it was sour and spicy and it had the sweetness taste of seafood as I believe the gravy had been cooked with prawn shells. No doubt the gravy of the noodle was very delicious but the catch of the day was not that fresh. I could feel the green prawns had been kept over night and the shell was quite soft instead of fresh and hard.

Nasi Goreng Paprid (Paprid Fried Rice) RM4.00 is one of the recomended nasi goreng paprid that I love. Overall, all the preparation were pre-ready. The rice was cooked until the pan aroma was strong enough, the gravy was delicious while the ingredients used such as squids, chicken cubes and vegetables were all very fresh. It is one of my favorite.

Mee Udang + Ketam (Prawn + Crab Noodle) RM6.00, the gravy used for this noodle is the same as the one used for “mee udang” (prawn noodle). However, I still prefer the gravy for the prawn noodle as the taste of the crab in prawn crab noodle has made the gravy slightly over sweet and it really overwhelmed the taste of noodle and the vegetables.

Nasi Goreng Udang (Fried Rice Prawn) RM6.00, before I ordered this dish, I have in mind that this dish will have the mixture of prawn with fried rice blend together. However, it came out very different as I thought. The fried rice remained as fried rice while the prawn was cooked with semi dried chili paste gravy. If you want to order the mixture of prawn with fried rice, that should be Udang Nasi Goreng (Prawn Fried Rice). Although the separation of fried rice and prawn, the taste is still delicious and acceptable. For those that unable to take spiciness, think twice before you order this dish.

Overall, the gravy and the cooking style here is great and very delicious. The only improvement that this stall should take care of is the freshness of their sea catch. They should have frequently checked on their stock before serving.

The name HOT WOK Restaurant is already well known to Penangites. Hot Wok has been operating in and around Tanjung Tokong district as early as 1994. After more than a decade’s experience in rescuing Nyonya cuisine, Hot Wok decided to relocate to two adjoining double-storey pre-war houses along Jalan Burma, Penang. The concept of Hot Wok is to provide diners with an ambience which is rich with Nyonya Heritage and culture.

It is very easy to locate Hot Wok, just drive along Jalan Burma (one way), watch out for you right just after Nagor Place. You won’t miss that as it is at the middle of a row of shop houses.

The interior design and ambience is very classical and the lighting is quite dimmed and it has the feeling of living in the past.

This place is not just famous for its historic value. It is also a usual visit place by the previous Malaysia Prime Minister, Tun. Dato. Mahathir.

Even most of the utensils used look and feel like the one at our granny’s home. Special thanks to CK Lam for the arrangement of this review.

Starter:

Choon Piah (Deep Fried Spring Roll), This crispy skin used to stuff in veggie filling is a great starter, it actually goes well with the home mixture which used Lea & Perrins sauce.

Loh Bak (Assorted Deep Fried Rolls). This is the most common traditional food around which everyone knows in Malaysia. This meat roll was made from minced meat and was wrapped in yuba (soya bean skin). The loh bak tasted hot and juicy. It is a combination of crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. This is indeed one of my favourites.

Kiam Chai Ark (Duck Meat with Assorted Veggie Soup). Another traditional Nonya style food. This soup tasted salty and was full of vegetables, assorted vegetables, tomatoes and sour plums. The taste of this soup was up to par.

Oo Kuih (Yam Cake), the texture of this cake was soft and you could even taste the slices of yam inside. This dish was garnished with slices of chilis and spring onions. It is great to be served with sweet chili sauce that came together with this dish.

Main Course:

After a list of starters, now we are into the main course. The first in the main course list is Hokkien Mee (Prawn noodle). From the name you should know the main ingredients would be prawns, even the soup base will be cooked in prawns as well. For those having allergic to prawns must be cautious as the owner of Hot Wok told me that some customers requested not to include prawns due to prawn allergy, but they didn’t know that the soup was cooked with prawns. Other than prawns this bowl of noodle also included roast pork, hard boiled egg, fried onions and kangkung (water spinach). The taste of this noodle was acceptable and up to standard.

Tau Eu Bak (pork stewed in soy sauce). This dish contained sweet based sauce, however it was delicious as the sauce was thick and tasty while the braised pork tasted like “bak hu” pork floss. The meat was boiled until semi-dried which brought out its flavour. The aroma of the herbs in the gravy was very pleasant. The dish was completed by placing the sliced hard boiled eggs on top of the dish. This dish is one of my favourites too.

Curry Kapitan, the chicken was cut into big chunk and was slow-cooked in curry to become thick and aromatic. The taste of the curry was not too spicy but indeed it was very thick. It is one of the great dish to be completmented with rice.

Curry Tumis Stingray Fish. This tumis curry was served in claypot with a fresh sting ray which was very juicy. The aroma of the curry was very strong and they didn’t use much of salt or sugar on this dish. The taste from the curry was merely generated by the spices and garnish of the dish.

Pork Cincaluk, the pork cubes was cooked together with cincaluk (Malay sauce based fermented shrimp). Personally, I find this dish too salty.

Assam Prawns, the prawns were marinated with tamarind and assam and cooked with dark soy sauce. The sauce was sweet and sour and it was a very appetising dish.

Jiu Hoo Char, this is another traditional and popular dish that we are used to its taste. It was cooked using strips of bangkwang (yambean), carrots, mushrooms and dried jiu hoo (squid). This dish was slightly dry compared to others, but the taste was also good when wrap with lettuce.

Dessert:

There are various desserts available at Hot wok too. Desserts are usually great as it ends the banquet with excitement. Most of the desserts were great. The only challenge is on the Mango Cendol which was extremely sour on the taste.

Sago Honeydew

Sago Nangka

Sago Gula Melaka

Cendol

Mango Cendol

Ice Kacang

Mango Cendol

Cendol

Sago Honeydew

Sago Nangka

Sago Gula Melaka

Ice Kacang

Overall, I find the food at Hot Wok was cooked in a very traditional way. It really has the taste which brings back memories to my granny’s days. The ambience here was also very classy and cozy, the only drawback to this place is the parking. As for the pricing the charges is according to per serving.

Palm means the inner surface of a hand. Palm is also the layman term of the plant Palmae. As for Palm Village Cafe, the name of the palm takes both meaning. As you can see from the banner below which shows a Palm tree over a cup of coffee.

The Chinese character (掌心), which means “Heart of the hand palm” literally is hung on the entrance of the cafe. The concept of this cafe is to serve home-cooked food in a cosy and homely ambience with some lifestyle and scenery paintings.

The easiest way to get to this place is by using Jalan Fettes, (水池路) the winding dam road. Once you reached the end of the winding road you will be at Jalan Lembah Permai. Watch out for your first left turning, that will lead you to Lorong Lembah Permai 3. Drive 30 metres further and you will see a row of shop houses on you right. Palm Village Cafe is just behind these shop houses, which is at Lorong Lembah Permai 4.

30th May 2009 was a big day for Palm Village Cafe as this was their grand opening. I was honoured to be invited by the host for their grand opening. Also special thanks to Criz for the arrangement.

The Grand Opening was performed by Datin Teh Bee Koon and Mr. Choh Kiat Siong, the senior artist who decorated the Palm Village Cafe.
