There are many suggestions on where to get the best Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus in Penang. Some said at Bangkok Lane, while some even said at Esplanade. In fact, besides those places there is another place recommended by many Penangites.

The mentioned stall is located at Tanjung Bungah. This place is slightly hidden from the main road. If you are driving via Jalan Tanjung Bungah to Batu Ferringhi, you will sure bypass Jalan Lumbah Permai on your left and you will see Maybank situated in one of the shoplots. Keep driving straight along Jalan Tanjung Bungah until you reach Jalan Chan Siew Teong on your left. Turn into Jalan Chan Siew Teong and you should see a coffee shop called Kwong Ban Lee on the far end of the shop houses. Just next to the coffee shop is Pasar Mini Tedjen. The stall that sells Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus is just in front of the coffee shop.

Barkath is one of the few stalls in the coffee shop. Barkath has been operating the stall for 10 years.

Barkath Stall was initially located at Jalan Tanjong Bungah and has just moved to this coffee shop 6 months ago.

Barkath Stall is not only selling Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus, but also pasembur, roti canai, murtabak, tosai and capati.

Mee Goreng/ Mee Rebus, Regular – RM3.50

Mee Goreng/ Mee Rebus, Large – RM6.00

Mee Sotong, Regular – RM6.00

Mee Goreng, Regular – RM3.50. The mee goreng was stir-fried in semi-dried style, topped with fried onions, bean sprouts, chili slices, spring onions, squids, deep fried flour cakes and a slice of lime.

The texture of the noodle was very springy and the taste of the noodle was just as excellent. It was neither too sweet nor salty. The pan fried aroma was very tempting. The spiciness level was just nice and acceptable. This is in fact one of the best Mee Goreng in Penang.

Mee Rebus, Regular – RM3.50. As for mee rebus, it was cooked with 1 boiled egg, squids, deep fried flour cakes, bean sprouts, chili slices, spring onions and a slice of lime.

The mee rebus was not as tasty as the mee goreng. The gravy was thick and not too spicy. Overall, the mee rebus is considered acceptable. I still prefer the mee goreng.

Overall, the taste of mee goreng here was excellent whereas the mee rebus was acceptable. The price was inexpensive and the portion given was generous too. There are a lot of parking lots just around the shop houses. The only drawback is this place is very hot during noon and afternoon.

When talking about the history and legendary of Indian noodle, which is Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus, only a handful of stalls can actually compete with the one at Bangkok Lane, Pulau Tikus.

If you are coming from Komtar via Burmah Road heading to Pulau Tikus, you should see the Pulau Tikus police station on your right. Opposite the police station is a row of shophouses housing Penang Dental Surgery. Drive for another 50 metres, you should see Bangkok Lane on your right. The coffee shop is just at the corner of Burmah Road and Bangkok Lane.

Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus stall has been there for eight decades. Usually for a business that can last that long, it is either the capital is very strong or the product is sellable. As for this stall, it is definitely the latter.

This stall is inherited from generation to generation. It has been passed down from the owner’s father to himself and now he is partially handing over to his son. Speaking in fluent Hokkien, the owner mentioned that he started helping his dad to sell Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus 50 years ago and during that time it only cost 20 sen per plate.

Now is his son’s turn to help him out. The father and son take turns to handle the wok . Usually the son will make the initial start up while the father will do the finishing .

Mee Goreng – RM5 (big as default, if you can’t finish you need to mention for small plate, RM4). Delicious Mee Goreng with lots of chewy cuttlefish, potatoes, eggs, bean sprouts with the reddish sweet potato gravy finishing with chili sauce, tomato sauce and fried onion.

The taste of the mee goreng was so delicious. The controlling of the fire and also the mixture of gravy was perfect. Each mouthful had a mixture of crunchy, chewy and softness feeling. The slight sweetness from the tomatoes and also the spiciness of the chili are the classic taste of indian noodle. For those that love a soury touch, a slice of lime was served together as extra seasoning.

Mee Rebus – RM5 (again normal default order will be big plate). Delicious Mee Rebus with lots of chewy cuttlefish, potatoes, eggs, bean sprouts with the reddish sweet potato gravy finishing with chili sauce, tomato sauce and fried onion.

The ingredients used to cook mee rebus are almost the same as mee goreng. The only difference is that the noodle is served with gravy instead of fried. I find that mee rebus is more appetizing as the gravy was a bit soury and tasty.

Overall, the taste of the mee goreng and mee rebus at Bangkok Lane is one of the best in Penang. The taste is really unbeatable and is a must try for both locals and tourists. Although the price is slightly on the high side the portion of the food is generous. The only drawback is the limited car park available around the coffee shop.

Seven Bistro and Restaurant is a new restaurant in Penang. It is not very hard to locate this restaurant at it is settled at Gurney Walk of Gurney Plaza, which is just next to Dome Cafe.

Coincidently, I found myself to have taken only 7 pictures for this post. This is an exact match to the restaurant’s theme “Seven”. In fact, all the side-dishes in the menu are priced at RM7 per dish for all day long.

The restaurant has a very modern and innovative look. Just like many of its neighbours, the restaurant/bistro has indoor and outdoor dining areas. For smokers you have to be seated outside whereas indoor is for non-smokers and is air-conditioned. The indoor dining area can cater for approximately 30 people whereas outdoor can cater for about 20 people.

The price for set lunch is RM11 (set dinner is RM13), inclusive of a fixed choice of main course and soft drink. At such an environment and on a Saturday afternoon, the set lunch is considered cheap. But it all depends on which set that you order.

Grilled Lamb Chop with romesco and mint sauce. This is the most valuable set of all. For those who enjoy lamb, this is a must-order. The portion was quite big as they gave 2 slices of lamb chop. The texture of the lamb is just nice not too over-cooked. Combined with the mint sauce it is a delicious combination.

Pasta with ham in Cream Sauce. The pasta was cooked in cream sauce. All the pasta dishes on the menu are in cream sauce type only and they don’t have any in Napolitan or Bolognese sauce. The taste of this pasta was very standard, with a touch of chives sprinkled on top and some herb powder on the side of the plate.

Chargrilled Chicken Breast with Hand-cut Potatoes, this is the set that is not so valuable. The portion of the breast meat was surprisingly very small, in fact it was much much smaller than the lamb chop. It just needed my 2 mouthful to finish eating the set. However, the taste of this main course was acceptable with some fried potatoes and salad served as side dishes.

Spanish Grilled Chicken. Taste-wise and portion-wise, this set is still reasonable. The Spanish-style sauce went well with the grilled chicken, alongwith some cut potatoes and salad.

The Iced Lemon Tea which was served together with the set lunch.

Overall, the taste of the food here is acceptable. However, some of the main course portion is too little. The place is very cozy and with free WIFI. There are also plentiful of parking space inside Gurney Plaza.

Hydro hotel, a four-star exclusive hotel is the perfect choice for a luxurious, warm and rejuvenating vacation. Hydro hotel is located along Miami beach on the renowned Batu Ferringhi stretch.

To go to Hydro Hotel from Tanjung Bungah, you should be using Jalan Batu Ferringhi which leads the way to Batu Ferringhi. For around 2km’s drive you will see The Reef condominium. Drive for another 500 metres you will be heading down the slope and then you will see Hydro Hotel sign board on your left.

For those who love sea side and beaches, you can always choose the room facing to the sea to enjoy the warm sea breeze and to watch sunrise/sunset. It is a peaceful getaway.

Magnificent view at dusk which took my breath away. It just attracted me to keep standing there and hope that moment will last forever.

Behind the hill is the sunset. On the other end there was rainbow shining above the hotel which made a very contrast and extraordinary combination.

For those who can afford to pay more for the comfort, you can always try out the VIP studio suite here. The tariff rate for this room is RM780. However, the rate of booking online or walk-in will differ depending on the season.

The comfortable king-sized bed along with fluffy pillows is perfect for couples seeking a good night’s sleep.

Overall, there are a lot of varieties for the buffet at the hotel. There are almost 80 over dishes in this buffet, the price is definitely value for money. The taste of the food and service is acceptable. The presentation of the food is remarkable. The only drawback is that the dining area is not air-conditioned. It would be better if it is equipped with air-conditioners rather than normal ceiling fans.

Harwicke House has always been an urge for me to drop by for dinner after work. In fact this place is so near to my office by walking distance. However, I was not so sure about the taste and the price of this place until now. Thanks to Jason and Gill from Gourmet Garden for organizing this fantastic review.

Hardwicke House is always the perfect location for social functions, reunion dinners, press conferences, weddings, wedding engagements and parties. The look from outside this building is elegant with high-rise tower resounding this heritage building.

Most people will be attracted to reasonably-priced buffets.

The salad bar serves a wide array of salad, it is a haven for vegans.

For wine lover, there are var options of wine in their storage.

I was told that the method to taste a good wine is via the below few methods:

Color – For red wine, if the color of the wine is more transparent, meaning that the wine is older

Aroma – If the smell of the wine is stronger the better it is for the wine

Taste – It is very variance for this subject to affect everyone. Generally, Carbonate Merlot will have stronger taste while Shiraz will have lighter taste.

Finishing – The finishing is also marking a lot of points for wine tasting as the finishing are very different from the taste when it just touch down the tongue.

Friulvini Verduzzo (Fizzy) @ RM 55.00. Sparkling like taste for this white wine. For ladies this is their preference. However, for me I felt that this wine is slightly too sweet instead.

This is straw yellow with greenish reflections. Delicate, slightly fruity, pleasantly aromatic. Full-bodied with slightly acidulous flavor. This aperitif wine goes well with first course, with confectionery or fruit.

TerraNoble Sauvignon Blanc 2005 @ RM 63.00

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is yellow colour with some greenish tones. It has intense fruity aroma in tropical fruits, especially pineapples. It’s a very fresh wine, not bubbling, dry and well balanced. It has a good structure and a nice natural acidity which has a long permanence in mouth. Ideal as an aperitif too, with seafood and fish. This wine is drunk best at 7C -8C.

Schubert “Hardwicke Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (Recommended Retail Price is RM 118.00. Promotion Price now is RM 60.00)

Schubert is a new winery in New Zealand. This deeply coloured wine exhibits an intense nose of blackberries, plum and dark chocolate with notes of walnut and spices. Full bodied and extremely well structured with layers of super ripe tannins complemented by a long, sweet and dark fruit filled finish.

For those who enjoy a quieter ambience, this is the great place to be as there are a few private rooms and VIP rooms in this restaurant.

Mon to Sat = Lunch buffet @ 18++. Dinner buffet (including BBQ) @ 38++. No ala carte.

Sunday Buffet = Buffet brunch @ 20++. BBQ Dinner buffet @ 38++. Kids eat for free (limited to 2 per family, below 10yrs old only). Free parking for dinner.

From December 2009 till Jan 2010 is the promotion period to enjoy free flow of non-alcoholic beverages on all buffets.

Overall, the food here is good and reasonably-priced. For wine lovers, this will be like a wine paradise. If only this place has some signature dishes to offer, it will definitely attract more people to visit this place again.

Many times, during weekend morning thinking for a good place for breakfast might be killing me off. Usually, there will be few places in my head Sungai Tiram’s Breakfast, Batu Lanchang’s No 76 Breakfast Stall, O & N Wan Tan Mee, or even this particular post on Roti Canai. These are the few morning breakfast that come to my mind as I am not so fancy about hokkien mee or curry mee over the morning meal, if I still insist I will be messing up the toilet.

The roti canai stall that I am going to introduce today, is quite well known stall in Jalan Tengah Flat. For those that working at Bayan Lepas Industrial area, this place will not be familiar to most of you. Kafe Sin Kim Sing is one of the breakfast and lunch coffee shop. There are varieties of food selling here during breakfast. However, one of my favorite here is the roti canai stall.

This roti canai stall is just under the stair case that you will not miss when you enter to this coffee shop. Usually there will be an Indian “ah mah” (granny) standing in front the stall to make the roti canai while taking the order.

It seems like it is a family business where most of them are here to sell the roti canai, they are like 3 generation together. According to the owner, Andy this stall had been operated for a decade.

The price of the roti is quite reasonable, Roti Canai RM0.80 and Roti Telur RM1.50. This is the usual standard market rate after the patrol hike, never the less the petrol already dropped but the price for the food still remain high everywhere.

Normally for me I would order just the plain roti canai rather than roti telur. I find that the plain roti canai is more crunchier and also more pan fried aroma compare to roti telur.

For those that not preferring sweet, this might not be a good option for you as the dough is slightly sweet, as well as the kuah “curry”. One thing special about this roti canai is that the crunchiness will still maintain even after my photo session which normally everything will be cold and soften off.

To me the taste of the dough really goes well with the kuah. It really give me the feeling of divine food.

For those that out of idea on where to get breakfast, you might want to consider this. By the way, the advisable time to be here is before 10:30am else you will end up empty handed.

I always tell my mama “Life is like a box of lunch box, you can be expecting what is inside”. I still remember I used to have lunch box during my school days. I could tell what was inside whenever I smelled the lunch box. Even by the look of the dishes I could tell what they tasted like. That was why whenever I see other students ordered food from the canteen, I envied them as they could always order different dishes and varieties.

After 17 years of lunch-box’s life, finally I could be released from this. I always get the chance to try food from everywhere as my nature of business is to visit customers. No doubt, I have the chance to try the best food all around, and now the saying has changed to “Life is like a meal set, you will never know what you gonna eat next round”. Now if I have the choice I would love to go back home for dinner every night. I also believe that for people who work away from home will have this feeling as well.

Home cooked food will always be the preference for those who work far away from home. Ivy’s Kitchen is the choice for those who love home cooked, Nyonya-style food.

A cup of hot tea to start off the day. It looked like a 3-colored tea, although it was just a normal cup of tea.

Ivy’s Kitchen offers set lunch and also meals for dinner. The set lunch are mostly affordable and delicious. Below are the varieties of the set lunch:

COMBO A: Chicken Rendang (RM9), this set comes with a bowl of plain rice served with delicious chicken rendang (thick dry curry chicken), half of a boiled egg, deep fried peanuts & ikan bilis (anchovies), papadam (Indian’s cracker) and mix pickled cucumber with pineapple salad. This is one of my favourites as the taste of the rendang is thick and the aroma of the spices is just as thick as well.

COMBO B: Beef Rendang (RM8.50), this set is quite similar to the Chicken Rendang as it comes with a bowl of plain rice served with delicious beef rendang (thick dry curry beef), half of a boiled egg, deep fried peanuts & ikan bilis (anchovies), papadam (Indian’s cracker) and mix pickled cucumber with pineapple salad. The spices and the curry of this dish is the similar to the chicken rendang. The tenderness of the meat was just nice and it really blended well with the curry. For beef lovers, this is a must-order.

COMBO C: Nasi Lemak (RM7.50). Just like its name, the rice served is cooked with coconut milk and chopped ginger. The Nasi Lemak was served together with spicy and sour ikan bilis curry, fried ikan bilis with peanuts, half of a boiled egg, deep fried peanuts, ikan bilis, a piece of fried chicken, fried asam ikan kembung (chubb fish) and fish crackers. This is the most valueble meal with varieties of dish served, for those who have budget concern, this would be the saviour.

Those who do not prefer ikan kembung, they can always opt for the CUSTOM COMBO: Stuffed Fried Cincaru (hard-tailed mackerel) at RM9 or RM3.80 per fish as add-on. The fish was fragrantly fried with a strong hint of tamarind, blended chili and finely-sliced Kaffir lime leaves.

COMBO D: Fried Fish Fillet Noodles (RM9), this is the cheng thng soup (clear soup) and not a spicy-based soup. The noodle can be chosen from Maggi Mee (instant noodles), Bee Hoon (rice noodles), Tang Hoon (glass noodles) or porridge. The soup was cooked using chicken stock as base and with some added Chinese cabbage, minced chicken balls and fried dory fish fillets. The soup is clear yet fantastic, it is made for the non-spicy lovers.

The above-mentioned combos are served with a complementary glass of fresh fruit/vegetable juice and a dessert (soya jelly with longan).

Other than the delicious set lunch from Ivy’s Kitchen, they also served ala-carte meals as shown below:

Penang Asam Laksa (RM5)

Fresh Grouper Fillet Porridge (RM9)

Other than the ala-carte and set lunch menu, Ivy’s Kitchen also serves dishes for dinner. Some of the dishes that you would expect would be like the Sweet and Sour Flower Crab (RM50 – based on market price and may differ from time to time)

Tofu with Seaweed Soup (RM15)

Fried Snow Pea Shoots with Bean Sprouts (RM10)

Fruit Platter (RM12)

Overall, most of set lunch at Ivy’s Kitchen are affordable and delicious. Whereas the dishes for dinner, some are affordable while some are more on the expensive side. No doubt the taste of the lunch set is great but for the dinner dishes, there is still room for improvement.

Latest update: This shop had been close for business.

Today is the greatest day in my life. Steven’s Hotspot, one of the largest chain cafes had a grand opening in Penang and all these chain stalls are owned by me, Steven Goh. I am now one of the richest men in Malaysia. Everyone of you who visit my chain stalls will have a 50% discount.

Alright, that was just another dream of mine. I am still Steven Goh the food blogger. I didn’t own Steven’s Hotspot or any other chain stalls. I just own StevenGoh.com and a small car.

Steven’s Hotspot is owned by Steven’s Corner. Steven’s Corner was founded in 1976 by an Indian couple. Steven’s Corner is a mamak restaurant located in Overseas Union Garden, off Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur. Steven is the nickname of Silan, a member of the family. The original stall sat on a shop corner, hence the name Steven’s Corner.

The first Steven’s Hotspot in Penang is located inside BayAvenue, Bayan Lepas of Lorong Bayan Indah 3. As mentioned, Steven’s Hotspot is under the management of STG Resources Sdn. Bhd., this goes the same with Steven’s Tea Garden. Sigh, all the Steven’s name had been taken up. Next time I could only use the name Steven Goh’s Corner, if my dream comes true.

Steven’s Hotspot, is a place targetting business people and also young working adults. The idea of Steven’s Hotspot is slightly different from Steven’s Tea Garden. Usually, Steven’s Tea Garden and Steven’s Corner offered Mamak’s Dishes and Rice, Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak and Mee Goreng. However, Steven’s Hotspot only offers some of the menu above but excluding Mamak’s Rice and Dishes.

The main selling point of Steven’s Hotspot is on it’s Business Center. Steven’s Hotspot also provides a comfortable place for chit-chatting, relaxing and to have light meals.

Trendy and colourful environment with most of the crowd consist of business people and also young working adults.

According to the Marketing Manager of STG Resources Sdn. Bhd., Michael Ng, Steven’s Hotspot is focusing more on lifestyle and ambience rather than on food. The food here are supplied by high-quality vendors instead of from its own kitchen. All the food being sold here are purely Halal.

Steven’s Teh Tarik (RM2.50), one of the signature drinks in this shop. The taste is slightly sweet to me, it is very suitable for sweet tooth people. As for the pricing for all the food here, it is still not fixed as the management has not finalized on the pricing yet.

Blueberry Cheese Pie (RM6), the taste of the pie is just like a normal cheese cake, nothing too special.

Lychee Cake (RM8.50), slightly sweet but still at an acceptable level. It is one of the best of all.

Tiramisu Cake (RM8.50), the taste for this cake was a bit plain. I still prefer the lychee cake.

Tuna Sandwich (RM8), a usual tuna paste filled into croissants.

Seafood Sandwich (RM8), with crab-flavoured sticks and mushrooms.

For those who would like to join the membership of Steven’s Hotspot, there are a range of cards from Classic, Silver, Gold to Platinum.

Overall, the Steven’s Hotspot focuses more on environment and lifestyle. For those who want to find a relaxing place for business talk or place to chill out, Steven’s Hotspot is the place to be.

Operation hours: 11:00am – 11:00pm (7 days a week)
Address:B-16-1, Lorong Bayan Indah 3, 11900 Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang.
