Patio Bar de Tapas Weld Quay, A Place for Nice Food and Chill Out

Holy Mamacita! If no one explained to me what I am ordering here at Patio Bar de Tapas, I think I will just close my eyes and made a random order.

Patio is a nice and cozy place located at Weld Quay. Bar De Tapas is the title of the bar at Patio. In fact, the title itself is  already making you feel like you are in Barcelona.

There is a nice bar counter to chill out for drinks.

The outdoor dining area is covered with purple lighting to create a romantic ambience.

For those looking for privacy, you may choose a seat at the VIP corner located at first floor.

There is also a wine cellar which displays their great variety of wines. For a wine lover like myself, this place is called a “heaven”.

Salmon rebozado aderezado con pure de manzan – RM24, the salmon slices were deep fried and served with some homemade sourish sweet sauce.

Seriously I could only read Salmon from the name of this dish. The rest I might have to Google for its meaning. Nevertheless, this dish tasted good as the crunchy crust of salmon blended very well with the juicy salmon meat. It was even better when paired with the appetizing sweet and sour sauce.

Hongos salvajes con tomillo y ajo – RM15, the meaning of this dish is slices of mushroom pan fried and served with slices of breads.

The taste of the mushroom was surprisingly good. The mushrooms were so juicy and when taking together with the crunchy slices of toast, it was like taking a crunchy toast with juicy bite texture.

Costillas de cerdo – RM58, obviously the name of this dish is barbecue pork ribs (by the look of my photo).

The barbecue ribs here are very much different from other restaurants. The ribs here were covered with herbs and seasoning. For those that love the strong scent of herbs this is the right place for you.

Arroz Paella de Mariscos con Gambas – RM58, This is the seafood paella rice covered with clams, scallops and shrimps.

This is one of the signature dishes here. To me, to simplify the name of it, it is actually an Asian seafood claypot rice. No doubt the aroma of the rice which was covered with the abundance of seafood was simply awesome.

Marisco Pasta de Tinta de Calamar – RM 32, The pasta that had been cooked with squid ink and seafood.

The preparation of squid ink pasta is not easy as it requires a certain level of skill set. If it is not managed properly, the pasta will have strong seafood stench and it will ruin the taste of the pasta. At Patio, they managed to prepare the pasta without any stench and it tasted great with the combination of seafood.

Open Tortilla horneada con champinones, tocino y queso mozzarella – RM 32, tortilla covered with mushrooms, olive, bacon and creamy mozzarella cheese.

This dish might be easily mistaken for Pizza. However, Tortilla is something that very common in Spain. To me it is a healthier version of pizza with a thinner crust although the taste and the bite of this dish is similar to pizza.

Wild Boy – RM28, this drink has been mixed with apricot and brandy. It was a nice combination drink and it tasted appetizing. It is one of my favourite drinks here.

Snow White – RM25 a mixture of vodka, apple juice, cinnamon syrup and lemon juice. Although the name of this drink is called snow white but the cinnamon has overwhelmed the entire drink which is not my cup of tea.

Knock Knock – RM32 served with metal ice ball. It contains Absinthe which is highly alcoholic. This is specially dedicated to alcoholics. If you think you can stand the high content of alcohol in this drink, come and have a try.

Mojito – RM28 mixed with rum, brown sugar, lime wedges and soda water. This is a common drink at any bars. To me, the taste of this drink will determine the standard of that bar.

Overall, the food here was nice and the price is considered reasonable. There are even private car parks available which are a few doors away from this restaurant and most importantly they are FREE for Patio customers. The drawback of this restaurant is the waiting time is too long. It could be due to lack of waiter/waitress on that day.

O & N Kopitiam, Gelugor – Still Serving One of The Best Wan Tan Mee

I have been patronising O & N Wantan Mee for decades. I used to eat this wantan mee when I was in secondary school. My first blog on this wantan mee was way back in 2007, when O & N was still a stall at Delima Mas Coffee Shop. Over the years, they moved from Mandarin Cafe to owning their own shop.

Recently, O & N Kopitiam has moved to another new location with a much cosier ambience. Check out the video below for more details:

China House, Georgetown – A Place that I Would Go Back Again and Again

China House is one of the pioneer cafes in Penang. It is well-known for its “longest cafe” linking 3 heritage buildings and comprising of 14 spaces which have been converted into shops, cafes, restaurants galleries and multi-purpose performance theater and linked by an open air courtyard.  China House is modeled on a lane way concept with path from Beach Street to Victoria Street with a total length of 400 feet. This place is popular for its heritage-style concept with nice fusion food, 30 varieties of cakes daily and nonetheless its great ambiance and vibes. I remember I started to blog about this place back in 2012, then again in 2016. Now in 2017, I am back to China House again. This time I am here to check out some interesting changes over the years.

Nothing much have changed since I last visited China House. The interior and exterior of the cafe still remain the same. There are 3 different restaurant menus offering different types of food in China House.

The fine dining area is still the same with the usual layout and theme colour.

My usual favorite spot at Beach Street Bakery in China House. This area is always packed with 30 over variety of cakes. If only I had a bigger appetite to try out every single the cake on the table. 😀

The art gallery on the top of floor is a space for the presentation of multiple art forms for the sharing of practice and the development of ideas.

Bon Ton Shop, this is the jewelry shop where it will hold monthly exhibitions of designer items.

You may also find some unique antiques at the shop.

There is even a private area where the customers able to chillout with a glass or 2.

The Vine & Single area contains a wide selection of whiskeys and fresh good wines. Customers are allowed to order a few packs that are displayed on the table.

The open-air courtyard linking between the heritage buildings provides an alternative seating area for customers.

The canteen is another section of China House that serves some alcohol with live band music. This is a great place to hangout and relax with friends.

Bento Special:

  • Kyuri, Corn, Buckwheat and Grape Salad with Citrus Dressing
  • Prawn and Onion Fritters
  • Sweet and Spicy Malay Style Dip
  • Char-Siew and Hoisen Marinated Chicken Thigh
  • Wolfberries Rice Pilaf

RM35.00 for single bento, RM68.00 for 2 persons sharing bento.

The taste of the sauce for the chicken thigh is similar to teriyaki sauce. The one that attracted me is the salad. I love the combination of appetizing citrus dressing and the salad.

Beef & Pumpkin Lasagna served with Mixed leaf salad – RM44, the minced beef is served with a layers of mashed pumpkin topped with creamy and riced cheese.

Although the Lasagna does not look very big in portion, the combination of cheese, pumpkin and minced beef makes it rich and creamy in taste. It was very fulfilling even though I only had half of it.

Avocado, Cashew Nut, Feta Salad with grapes, cranberries, rocket and pomegranate dressing & parmesan biscotti – RM40

This is one of the salads that I would highly recommend although the price is slightly on the high side. The appetizing pomegranate blended very well with the feta cheese cubes. Together with it were some salad leaves and crystallized cashew nuts to make it a great combination.

Tiramisu With Kahlua – RM15.00 per slice

One of the best selling cakes in China House. There are 2 options available, with alcohol and without alcohol. Of course, I still prefer the first version as alcohol is one of the main ingredients to make a good tiramisu cake. This cake had the right level of alcohol and together with its nutty texture, it tasted superb. It is indeed one of the signature cakes here.

Salted Caramel Cheese Cake – RM14

This cake surprises me. Prior to this, I have always thought that salted caramel is a combination of sweet and salty. I have never imagined that this combination would make the cake tasted so outstanding. This cake is not overly sweet and had a very smooth texture that it almost melted in the mouth.

Cappuccino – RM12.80

The usual cup of hot cappuccino. However, this is a must for someone like me who would end the meal with a cuppa.

Overall, this place is nice and cosy. Most of the dishes here are unique and the prices for certain dishes are quite value for money. The usual drawback about this place is the difficulty in getting a proper parking space.

G Hotel, Tree Bar – A Great Place to Chillout

G Hotel has organized a fun activity – Cocktail Making Contest together with Penang’s media and food bloggers to share with the public and fellow readers on special cocktails served at Tree Bar.

In this challenge, bloggers were required to make 2 cocktails which are Mojito and Cranberry Margarita. The contest started off with the bartender doing a demonstration on how to make the Mojito, a concoction of rum and soda muddled with lime, brown sugar, and mint leaves that gave that sweet and sour taste and Cranberry Margarita, a concoction of Tequila, Triple Sec, Lime juice and Cranberry juice.

As you can see I was one of the contestants who participated in the competition. Unfortunately I am not a talented barista therefore I did not win this contest. Nevertheless, I was grateful to be able to learn how to make cocktails.

G Hotel continues to trend set the hospitality sector with their new hip hangout spot, Tree Bar. Opened on the 19th June 2014, this bar is one of the coolest hangout spots in Penang serving the best beers and bites in town. Apart from the list of chilled beers and cocktails, they serve mouth-watering food to either pair with your drinks or enjoy on its own.

Nachos – RM 16, a common and addictive starter when chilling out with friends. This is something that goes well with a nice cold beer.

Siu Mai – RM 14, unlike Nachos, Siu Mai is not commonly found on the menu in regular pubs or bars. However at Tree Bar, they serve hot and steamed Siu Mai which is something unique.

Sausage Puff – RM 14, this is a classic and very common dish. Sausages were wrapped in puffs and baked. Serving together with the puffs is chili sauce. This is a must have finger food for drinkers.

Chicken Rolls – RM 14, this is a resemblance of “Loh Bak” which have been replaced with chicken meat instead of pork meat. The crispiness of the skin goes well with the juicy chicken meat.

Seafood Pizza – RM 32, the pizza is made of tuna, mussels and shrimps and covered with onions, pineapple and creamy cheese . The crispy crust has made the pizza appetizing and less heavy.

Chicken Katsu – RM 32, Japanese-influenced deep fried chicken with a golden and crispy crust served with cabbage, carrot and coriander. The katsu sauce is an excellent complement to the dish.

Crab Cakes – RM 32, the crunchy deep fried crab cakes stuffed with crab meat and served together with hot and extra spicy sauce. This sauce is specially dedicated to those who enjoy very spicy sauce.

Gyoza – RM 22, Japanese gyoza tasted so soft and juicy.

Vegetable Sping Rolls – RM 12, this is known as “poh piah chee” in Chinese, it is a deep fried spring roll stuffed with carrot and yam bean. This dish is nice to go with beer.

Buffalo Wings – RM 32, deep fried chicken wings with fresh celery and carrot sticks and served with cheese sauce. The crispy chicken wings tasted great when dipped in cheese sauce.

Mozzarella Stick – RM 22, deep fried mozzarella sticks with Mexican garlic salsa and extra virgin olive oil. The rich and aromatic mozzarella cheese sticks were added with some garlic salsa and extra virgin olive oil to give it an extra boost in flavour.

Overall, this place is an ideal place for a drink or two and to have some finger food. Its wooden bar and open-air concept makes it so chilling and cozy . The taste of the food here was good and the price of the food and beverages here was comparatively affordable.
