Lebuh Cecil Market Place, is also known as (7th Street Market) has always been my favorite place to hunt for good food. The nice and famous food here varies from curry mee, char kuih teow, lam mee and more. However those are only the common hawker food. There are some stalls selling a more unique food in this place too.
The one that I am going to introduce today is the Fried Sago stall inside the hawker center. The reason for this stall being so special and yet hidden from the public is because the location of the stall is on the left hand end corner from the main entrance of the hawker center. Although this stall is hidden from public’s view, there are many TV programs and bloggers managed to broadcast it.
The significance of the stall is there is a signboard hanging on top written as “姐妹七条路页峨炒” which means (Sisters 7th road fried sago). Originally this stall was operated and ran by 2 sisters selling the famous fried sago. According to the owner of this stall, fried sago is the sisters’ own innovation and creation. So far there are not many stalls in Penang that sell this type of dish.
Nowadays, the famous fried sago stall is not only selling their signature fried sago. They also prepared some other simple dishes and desserts for RM1.50 each. The price of each dish is considered very reasonable and hard to get such price in Penang. The available dishes and desserts are listed as below:

- Sang Mee
- Bee Hoon Soup
- Mee Sua Gor
- Sago Sweet Potato Soup
- Red Bean/ Bean Soup
- Bee Kor Mui
- Bo Bo Cha Cha
- Kan Tung (only available on Saturday and Sunday)
Today, the sisters are no longer running the stall. Instead, they are the one who do the cooking and managing at the back. The stall is currently run by the new generation of the sisters and also some foreign workers. Each of the dish is packed in a plastic bag and placed nicely on the counter. Whenever the order comes they will give you the pack and collect money from you.
The preparation of fried sago is a mixture of sago with hot water. After some pressing and rolling, the mixture is flatten to become a round biscuit shape. It is then placed into boiling water to cook. The sago biscuit is then taken out from the hot water once the texture has turned into semi-transparent. The sago biscuit is then cut into pieces and placed on another hot pan to fry. The ingredients inclusive of sambal, minced meat, tong chai, dark soy sauce, bean sprouts and spring onions.
This dish had a combination of 5 different tastes: hot, spicy, sour, salty and sweet . The texture of the sago was very springy and juicy. It is indeed a very unique and delicious dish.
Overall, the taste of the food was very appetizing and delicious. The texture of the sago was very special and I have never had this before in any place in Penang. The price of the fried sago was also very reasonable. The only drawback here is the parking availability and the place is not air-conditioned.
