Taman Emas, Gottlieb Road – Penang Famous Laksa

Laksa, one of the top food to be hunted if you are in Penang. There are a lot of places in Penang which have great laksa. These include Balik Pulau Laksa and Air Itam Laksa. However, you need to take the hassle to drive through the winding road or even pack with tourists for the bowl of laksa.

If you are at the town area and hoping to avoid these 2 tourist-packed places, a good suggestion will be at Taman Emas Coffee Shop at Gottlieb Road, Pulau Tikus. This coffee shop is located at the Gottlieb Road, opposite Penang Chinese Girl High School.

The stall of Laksa is just in front of the coffee shop.

The Asam Laksa is the typical Penang Laksa (RM2.50) which is spicy, sour and appetising. The soup base has been cooked with slices of fish and curry flower. The side ingredients include cucumber, pineapple and also mint leaves. The thick dark shrimp paste is placed on the spoon to thicken the flavour.

Other than laksa, this stall also sells side dishes of fried poh piah chee (deep-fried spring rolls) and chai koay (vege “kuih”). Usually these side dishes are selling fast, by 3:00pm they will be all sold off. There is another way of eating these poh piah chee, that is to place them in the laksa soup and the poh piah chee will absorb the soup and will become slightly soft instead of too oily and crunchy. It is a new type of fusion dish.

Besides laksa, there is also curry mee at this coffee shop. The curry mee is the traditional type.

The curry mee is cooked with coconut milk, curry, bean sprouts, “Tau Pok” (fried brown beancurd), frozen pork blood and shrimp. The small bowl of curry mee – RM2.80 and large RM3.30. Anyway, in my own opinion, the soup was slightly too salty. It is not highly recommended for high blood pressure person.

Other than the curry mee and laksa, there is also a stall selling char koay teow. Small plate of char koay teow – RM3.50 and the large – RM4.00.

The ingredients of this plate of char koay teow are koay teow, bean sprouts, cockles (siput), chives, egg, chinese sausages and prawn. This char koay teow is up to standard with the usual requirement. However the chili was slightly too overwhelming and also another drawback is the attitude of the stall owner was a bit boosted as when I went to order, he didn’t acknowledge my order. He was just staring at his handphone like nothing was happening.

Overall, the laksa here is up to standard and the service is good, if you don’t want to drive all the way to Balik Pulau or get cramped with tourists at Air Itam, then this is the most suitable place for you.

  1. It’s just a few hundred meters from our local base when in Penang. I only tried the laksa andthat dish was not really upto it. Thank goodness Penang has better [Penang] Laksa joints. Some of them are really yummy. This one: 7 outta 20 and I’m nice!
